Ohio's roads are really crappy too

I agree with the poster about New Yorks Turnpike, and I will one up you with the PA Turnpike. Worst stretch of road I have been on, and one of the most expensive to take.

I'm not sure how they do it, but the West Virginia Turnpike is awesome! Cheap, and the roads are immaculate, 70 Mph, Never see cops, very little traffic

I drive all over the Northeast and have yet to see roads as bad as Michigan's. There are stretches of bad in those states, but nowhere have I seen it as consistently bad as back home in Michigan. That said, last time I visited Detroit, the roads were looking a bit better than when I left there.

Drive a bit further Northeast and hit Maines back roads. I spent 20 years in the Northeast, every day, there are plenty of places that are as bad if not worse than the roads here in Michigan.

Maybe they should have left them that way.

Van Dyke was TERRIBLE last year. Many accidents just trying to avoid them. Frankly, I just avoided Van Dyke as much as I could!

How many of the states with bad roads have a "State" Transportation Department?
Ca. has a state Trans, Dept, (Caltrans), The roads, Highways and freeway's are with very well maintained, very few toll roads. But besides their Local and State Trans, Dept. they contract out to other Road construction Co's to put in or extend the main freeways.

When I left Ca.(7/07) they were just finishing an 8 mi. stretch of the "I-210" freeway, betweem Upland and San Bernardino.

I think it has alot to do with population growth, type of industries, just to mention afew.

Ha! The street I live on is Pothole City. You'd think we were on the moon if you saw how many craters we have in the roads...
Its bad enough that the neighbors can always tell if you're just visiting, because if you are, your car doesnt swerve in the right ways to avoid all the holes.

Then again, my state is famous for bad roads.
