It's not because the pipes are rusty that it became a health issue. It's when the water was untreated to allow the rust to corrode off the pipes and into the water flow. Pretty much any city that's over 50 years old has miles of rusty water pipes but pretty much all if not most municipal water departments treat the water to prevent corrosion.

Since Flint is now back on Detroit's water, it doesn't matter how rusty the pipe is as the water will be treated. The current issue, however, is that there is still lingering lead in the water system that has yet to be flushed out because Flint residents aren't using the water as much.

FLINT — Gov. Rick Snyder said he visited a Flint home on Monday and drank filtered water out of the family's kitchen tap, adding that he plans to continue drinking filtered Flint tap water for the next 30 days to show it is safe.

Note the emphasis on "filtered" - it's encouraging each resident to ensure they have a filter on their tap - and if so - there isn't reason to panic. Think of it as the "tone from the top". If the governor isn't willing to drink the water that has been filtered - why should residents think it is okay for them to do so.

It's called leading by example. A smart and necessary action.

Apparently they found lead in water in Grosse Pointe now. It was not clear how extensive it is. It may be another South Lyon where there is some problem with the faucet and it just needs to be flushed periodically.
