_Chance2jump is correct. In fact many buy here pay here car dealers are using GPS tracking and/or ignition shut off technology in the vehicles they sell as a way to decrease thier loss rate and minimize thier risk when doing business with the credit challenged public.
_Industry statistics show that dealers of this type have a delinquencey rate that poses a good threat to thier companies livelyhood, as well as higher loss rates when trying to recover a vehicle they need to reposess. The reality is, people skip out, dont pay and take vehicles with them that they haven't paid for and cant be found. GPS and start interrupt technology have proven to increase collection of payments and dramatically decrease loss rate of vehicles, in turn making buy here pay here more profitable and less risky.
_Regarding the ignition shut off and legality of this type of technology, it is the law in most states, as far as I'm aware, that the dealer has to use a disclosure statement at the time of sale if using a start interrupt system in the vehicle. GPS tracking on the other hand is different, although is not used as an invasion of privacy but as a way to recover assests in delinquency.
_Novices to this topic need be aware that an ignition relay cannot shut a vehicle off that is already turn on. _There are different types of systems, some use payment warning alarms, some don't. _Not all start interrupt devices are GPS and vice versa. _Most GPS tracking systems come with start interrupt but its at the dealers discretion as whether or not to install it. _Most start interrupt units that do not have GPS have a key pad visible to the customer and they have to enter a code given to them after making a payment. (Hence they know why thier car wont start)
_It is understood that some people have reservations of this type of technology being used on consumers and the general public. We all need to understand that the, GPS, M2M and telematics industry is a multi billion dollar market and is growing rapidly. Products with GPS recievers and tracking devices are all over the place. Any one with reservations should be more concerned about the Federal ID's we're all going to be required to have by 2010 that have a tracking chip in them. Any energy spent contesting this technology would be better used collectively to regulate it as to make sure its not taken advantage of or ends up in the wrong hands.
