Crazy ticket Fundraising.
My wife got a ticket in Wyandotte for supposedly speeding. She went to fight it because she had not yet reached the sign posting the reduced speed limit. When she went in, the person in charge told her she did not need to say anything. He knew where it happened, he knew what happened, and he knew who the officer was. He said that they had eight other people the same day opposing the same ticket from the same officer. He told her that she could fight it, but she would have to come back and she might lose and then she would get points and her insurance would go up. He offered to change the ticket to "impeding traffic" which was the same fine ($140), but no points, if she plead guilty to impeding traffic. Basically what she was being told was that the ticket was invalid, but if she would just pay the fine it would go away. The City is handing out bogus traffic tickets in order to raise money.
A friend told me that he got a ticket in Romulus (I think it was Romulus, maybe Taylor, there was another similar Taylor occurrence at about the same time) for going 5 m.p.h. over the speed limit. When he went to court, he was offered a chance to plea guilty to "Double Parking" an infraction that bears no points but had a substantially higher fine. To me this is simply extortion.
Anyone else experience this? How common is it?

Ah, so now Wyandotte is getting some of that speed trap $ ?
As I recall, most main roads in Wyandotte are 30-35 MPH except Fort St
..There is a notorious speed trap on Telegraph in Taylor- The 'Gardner White' trap. I was stopped and knew I was NOT speeding, but found it was useless to fight the ticket for 'impeding traffic'. Only in Michigan- get pulled over for speeding and end up with a 'granny' ticket for going too slow.
..No points on your record if you agree to this higher cost ticket. Benefit to city- no reporting or sharing fines to the state, since offense was breaking a municipal law, not state law.
.. I mentioned to my brother who drives that stretch Telegraph every day. Too late- Taylor already got his $, and his wife's, and mine. And they got 'granny tickets' also! A little tax for passing through town, they may as well put in a tollbooth. All you see is brake lights when anyone is near that spot, with or without police hiding in the parking lot.(Must be a notorious trap)

This happens everywhere. Dearborn Heights is where I discovered this little fundraiser. Canton is also another place. Watch out for Ford Road!

They are having a segment on this on ch. 7 today at 6 and 11. Sounds like all the things mentioned above. One officer handed out 2400 tickets in a year! If you don't catch the news it will probably be on the website. At least you know your not alone.Sounds like it is a pretty widespread problem.

I always opt for the other change if it does not give me any points.

The "gardner white cop" known as Corporal Sheldea. First time in Taylor besides driving through on I-94. I knew the speed limit was either 45 or 50 so I set the cruise at 49/50. Im driving up there and I see him ready to pull out. I figured he's gonna stop me for tint or 5 over which is chicken ****. Well he did stop me, and told me I was traveling at 57 in a 45. Uhh, what? Impeding traffic he ended up writing me for.

yes, I this happened to me as well
I was stopped by Wayne State police for going 20 over the speed limit. Total bs. I might have gone 5 - 7 over speed limit. Here is the thing.
1) The "cop" did not have any noticeable radar device. I realize that cops are trained to estimate the speed based on stationary items but that brings me to #2
2) When filling the ticket he put the speed limit was 25 so therefore I was going 20 over the speed limit. Actually the reduce speed to 25 sign was less than 6 feet behind where I stopped my car.
since he was unaware of the speed limit where he was posted... then how accurate would his speed estimates be?
I wanted to fight this ticket but DH tried to do that "protest" ticket strategy and it didn't work. I am convinced I would have beat this ticket by simple pictures and presenting the facts.
everytime I drive past this site which is everyday to work... I get ticked.
