hello
just would like to some more independant advice / knowledge about St joseph in Michigan. I have visited my Son and his sife there and they would like us to moved from England to live with/near them. I would like to as I miss them terribly and enjoyed the area but I went on my own while my husband stayed at home so I was missing him terribly and couldnt get used to him not being with me so I am not sure it homesickness or just missing him. I have tried to convince him it would be ok but he isnt for it-well he was then he wasnt I need a lot more info to be able to convince him. We are both retired early so not likely to work over there we have personal pensions to live on so finance isnt a problem. But would we get a mortgage over there if we wanted to buy our own property or would staying with our son and daughtger in law in their grnny flat be best? Our son has family medical insurance but i suppose we woudl need to pay the extra to cover us. We know he would need to apply for citizenship to sponsor us as its not possible for our daughter in law to (I forgot to mention she is American) Can anyone give us any positives about the area I woulod appreciate any comments at all really please

St. Joe is really nice. It sits on the banks of Lake Michigan with Silver beach at highlight. A varied selection of classic older homes, and newer developments. Aample shopping around the highway I-94. If you need a bigger city for things its about 55 minutes to Kalamazoo, and 2 hours to Chicago.

To be honest, the West side of Michigan is boring as hell. The economy is really bad, too. We get a LOT of snow compared to England.

All of that aside...I'm not too sure about immigration law. I doubt that you could just pick up and move here, as much as you want to...I feel bad saying that, but it's pretty true. You would need to get a visa of some sort, I'm assuming, and I believe you need to live in the U.S. for at least 3 years in order to apply for citizenship. Also, I don't know how possible it is for you to jump on your son's health insurance; usually, you can only do that if you are a domestic partner/spouse and/or dependent, meaning he would have to carry you financially. :/ I could be very wrong. The best thing to do is talk to an immigration lawyer.

Good luck, and I hope you can do what you want and need to do, honey.
