My husband is in the coast guard and will b relocated to Traverse city in sept. What does your boyfriend do there?

If you like the outdoors, you would love the Traverse City area. Lot's of year round outdoor activities and a bustling downtown with a lot of amenities. Housing prices are on the high side compared with much of Michigan but there are a lot of foreclosures (like everyplace else) that have driven prices down considerably. You should be able to find a modest newer home in good condition, in a decent neighborhood within 5 miles of the air station for somewhere in the $130-$150K range. Another option that I'd recommend would be to rent for a year and become familiar with the area before deciding where exactly you want to buy. You'll get a better handle on the pluses and minuses of the different parts of town that way.

You can search both for houses for sale and residential rentals on the local board of Realtors web site, that will give you an idea of what is available for each option.
