We do have widespread cable access up here. There are pockets that are relatively uninhabited that do not. We have DISH & DirecTV. Internet, same. We are actually on the cutting edge for LTE internet access--NMU has developed an Educational Access Network that will reach the entire UP. Our far-reaching internet access plans are what drew a visit from President Obama several years ago. I only see that access increasing to other populations--business and low-income, for example. But we are not without amenities. Not by any means. My familydoesn't have cable or dish service because it just got too expensive for what we were actually watching--we stream everything & have both an LTE connection via our work & a second high-speed internet connection via AT&T.

I know a guy who lives off grid, deep in the woods. He has a generator for electricity, but only uses it a few hours a day in the winter. He has high-speed internet & streams radio content (doesn't own a TV).

We do okay.

As far as being like Canadians...I don't know. We have similar ancestry--First Nations population with French fur trappers settling first. We have a lot of Finnish folks up here, who tend to be fairly stoic. So (in general) we may not be overtly, falling over ourselves friendly, but we are a helpful and caring lot.

Marquette is far more progressive/liberal then SSM. Trump beat Clinton by almost 10 pts in SSM but Clinton beat Trump almost 2:1 in the city of Marquette. Marquette is also way more beautiful, more trails, prettier lake, more shopping, etc. As a partisan conservative, I'd take Marquette because of quality of life factors over SSM anyday.
