I'd go with Kalamazoo. I lived for 5 years in Lansing and couldn't wait to leave. As soon as I a got a better job I was out of there. The town has sort of a dead, depressed feel to it and the surrounding towns Haslett, Okemos, Mason, Williamston, and Grand Ledge are just too boring to want to visit for an excursion outside of the city.

With Kalamazoo AT LEAST you are somewhat close to Grand Rapids, Grand Haven beaches, and Chicago is not that far.

Holy smokes, makes Kalamazoo out to be absolutely awful as "barely livable", as the attached capture shows. If true, is crime generalized, or in high-concentration pockets? I usually take web ratings with a grain of salt, and hope somehow their data is off.

Likewise it would be nice to see other Michigan cities merge:

Kalamazoo and Portage merge. The population would be around 125,000. (2 municipalities)

Grand Rapids 196,445, Grand Rapids Township 16,661, East Grand Rapids 10,694, Grandville 15,378, Kentwood 48,707, Walker 23,537, and Wyoming 72,125 = 383,547 (7 municipalities)

Detroit: 672,000
Grand Rapids: 383,547
Lansing: 210,000
Kalamazoo: 125,000
If you're counting all of that for GR, then for Kalamazoo you'd have to count all of these places (most even use Kalamazoo as a postal address, would honestly still be less sq. miles than the GR comparison): 2010 Census - Kzoo (74262), Portage (46292), Kalamazoo Township (21918), Cooper Township (8754), Comstock Township (14854), Oshtemo Township (21705), Texas Township (10919). Pop. of a Southern state version of Kalamazoo: 198,704
