I am going to be going to school soon in the Kalamazoo area, and I am excited I have heard good things about it, and the bad things, what's so neat is the cheap cost of living, and many things to do, but then I also thought about when Im done with school I would go to Lansing also a cheap city with many things to do, so what would you recommend Lansing mi or Kalamazoo mi.

I've lived in both cities and I'd take Kalamazoo any day over Lansing.

Downtown Lansing tends to shut down after the government workers have gone home for the evening.

Lansing is a nice area, but it's smaller than Kalamazoo. There's something to be said about living around MSU and all the stuff going on in East Lansing, but Lansing just wasn't the city for me.

What are you referring to by smaller? Lansing is more populated than Kalamazoo in every metric, so I am assuming you don't mean smaller in terms of people.

Thank you for your answers doing my research I found that Lansing is really in in an impoverished state right now, and Kalamazoo just seems to offer alot more opportunities then Lansing, I'm just a single girl, don't have kids and will never have any, I don't have a car can't afford it, so I need good transportation to get around, although living in the suburbs and the country is beautiful, it's all so boring and nothing to do, and I want a place where there is a lot to do, yet with my budget, really cheap cost of living, and Kalamazoo fits the bill plus, it close where I will be going to school

Kalamazoo is pretty cool for a small city. Idk how it compares to Lansing though. Lansing is a little bigger and MSU is more of a party school than WMU. But the job market in Kalamazoo is pretty good depending on what you want to do. And you can find some great apartments for some good deals in nice areas.

What I don't get is why east Lansing and Lansing are separated wouldn't be better if they where just one city, they would get the support of the college, and then mabye the economy would not be so bad

How are you getting that Lansing is in an impoverished state right now? I live in the area, and it doesn't seem to be that way apart from a few areas.

Actually the Mayor of Lansing has proposed the idea of merging the two cities. It is the opposition of the residents of E. Lansing which blocks this possibility. If the two merged along with Lansing Township, the population would be 170,000. Add Meridian, then it would rise to 210,000. (4 municipalities)

Likewise it would be nice to see other Michigan cities merge:

Kalamazoo and Portage merge. The population would be around 125,000. (2 municipalities)

Grand Rapids 196,445, Grand Rapids Township 16,661, East Grand Rapids 10,694, Grandville 15,378, Kentwood 48,707, Walker 23,537, and Wyoming 72,125 = 383,547 (7 municipalities)

Detroit: 672,000
Grand Rapids: 383,547
Lansing: 210,000
Kalamazoo: 125,000

Edit:
Detroit: 3,734,090
Grand Rapids: 383,547
Lansing: 210,000
Kalamazoo: 125,000

Well for Kalamazoo you could throw in Oshtemo, Parchment, Comstock, ect in there too.

If they annexed cities in Michigan like they do in places like Texas or Arizona, this would be the population of these cities.
