My son is interviewing for a job in Sturgis, Mi.... can anyone tell me about living in Sturgis? Looks like a town of 10k or so, small town living? Much for a new college grad to do there outside of work? Wondering if the commute up to Kzoo is a better idea although could be long in the winter. Thanks for any info.

Sturgis is basically small town living. They have a recently opened Meijer store and a couple of nice downtown blocks, but like most small cities, options are limited.

Historically, Sturgis was an industrial town. However in the 1990s, most of the factory jobs moved to Mexico or overseas putting a substantial hit on the local economy. The closing of the Kirsch factory took a major toll on the town's economy.

Ironically, as the jobs left for Mexico, there were many Mexicans that moved to Sturgis. Basically, as home values fell and houses became available when the local economy went south, the homes became affordable enough for Mexican families who work agriculture in the surrounding areas to move in. Thus there are several really good Mexican restaurants, a nice Mexican market, and a substantial Mexican population in the area.

As for commuting from Kalamazoo, it is doable but a long drive to make every day. I would recommend the opposite approach of living near Sturgis, and driving to Kalamazoo when you want to. Housing is cheaper, and since I am guessing more time will be spent at work than play, better to live closer to where you will be most often.

Sturgis has the last Hot N Now. That's a plus.
