nice apartments to rent in East Lansing? (Okemos: for sale, job)

Hi,

I'm moving from the east coast to East Lansing this summer for a new job there and have been looking for homes online for the past month. Some of the new development in down Lansing and East Lansing caught my eyes originally. But after reading carefully what people have said about these areas, I'm not so sure if those are worth buying. Now I'm considering renting an apartment that's recently built and hopefully close to MSU campus. Any recommendations? All comments/opinions are greatly appreciated.

My daughter has been renting a apartment about 5 miles from MSU (where she goes) its a new complex and they like it. Its called "The Village Apartments" There several other new complexes around there too. There on Abbot road which is also Chandler at one piont.. bus route is there too.Pools, tennis courts, ice rink, wieght room, bilards, movie theater, ect. all at the apartments

Do you want to live near the students or where the "adults" live? There are tons of options available, as well as some small homes that you could rent. How close to campus? Bike/walk close or 10-15 minute drive close? Lots of apartments on Lake Lansing Road, which tends to be just a little out of student range, with the exception of the large complexes on Abbott/Chandler Road.

My house is for sale, and I'm about 15 minutes (or less) from MSU. I'm in a very safe neighborhood, with a newer home (<5 yrs). PM me if you'd like more info!

There is certainly a wide selection in East Lansing and teachbeach is right it depends on who you want living near you. On campus and 10-15 min walking distance is almost all going to be college students. I have lived in two different dtn properties (capitol villa and beechwood) and have been fairly satisfied. They are a little older and 100% students though. They are putting in a couple of new apartments as we speak that look very nice, I am not sure of the names but I would look into those (at least one is dtn and they may be on the website dtnmgt.com). If you are looking for less students I would go a little further out, Dover's Crossing has a nice mix with less noise and there are several nice complexes in holt which is about a 10-15 min drive into campus. Lake lansing as someone else mentioned is also a nice area with less students, and Chandler has a lot of ammenities but probably largely student based.

How safe is the area? for a family with children is it a good place to live? I've heard Okemos is good but East Lansing has more appartment options. Any advice here? Thanks!!!!!!

If you are from a larger city on the East Coast you may be disappointed at what "downtown" means in both Lansing and East Lansing. Not to knock either, but it may not be what you have in mind. EL's downtown probably has more going on, but in about two weeks there will be 30,000 more people crammed in there and it might not be what you expect unless you are used to living with that many people under 22.

As others have said it already: if you want to live near the students, much if EL is the way to go, although there are nicer areas away from campus where the grown-ups live that are very nice. Same for Okemos (the next town over to the East) and certainly parts of Lansing are very nice as well and very affordable.

You should note that housing prices are coming down in the area and will likely not stop falling any time soon. My advice would be to come and visit and rent some nice house (there are many people renting out new, or near new, homes anymore that they could not sell) and then get to know the different areas before you buy.
