We've been to the Thumb many times and find ourselves considering it for retirement. The lower Saginaw Bay shoreline interests us because we are serious waterfowl watchers. Sebewaing is especially interesting for that reason. Real estate is also reasonably priced.

However, we know nothing about the area. Does it have a friendly, welcoming attitude toward newcomers, or will outsiders always be regarded as such? Sebewaing looks like it's close enough to Bay City that it might be something of a melting pot community of commuters. Is this the case?

Does it have good grocery stores? Any alarming level of crime? Can you safely walk around town at night? Are there enough decent stores for the essentials (grocery, hardware, etc.)?

We'd just as soon not got out as far as Port Austin - a bit remote for people our age.

Otherwise we are open to suggestions - Caro, Cass City, ???

There are virtually no stores in Sebewaing. It's hard to overstate how little there is to do there. And while locals may drive to Bay City for work it's not really close enough to be a desirable commuter town. None of the thumb towns are, at least relative to Bay City. If you're sweet on the Thumb Caro, Cass City, or Bad Axe offer cheap property with an actual small town feel. Small town as in, a step above crossroad villages with nothing to offer of their own.

If you are interested in the Thumb, look carefully. Most of the small towns are strugglingly economically. One indicator: Cass City no longer has a grocery store, although they are supposedly getting a new one this coming year. Bad Axe is probably a better choice, it's stronger economically and is closer to the lake than Cass City or Caro.

Thanks all for your comments. No grocery and hardware in Sebewaing? Wow. That means people there, and in Cass City, are driving far just for the essentials.

Guess we had better cruise the area and take a closer look.

Appreciate your input.

I also noticed you said something about walking around at night. In none of these towns will there be a reason to walk around at night, and in almost all of these towns there is nowhere to walk to. Bad Axe has a small downtown, but it's not bustling so I'm not sure where you'd be walking. Neighborhoods are very small, too.
