Moving to Garden City
Alright I am a lower middle class man roughly making about 30,000 a year. I was looking at 3 areas Garden City, Inkster, and Westland. I am very weary about moving to these cities because people said they are old and run down anybody have any other suggestions to move to? And would these 3 cities even be in my price range?

I live in Garden City and consider it a great place. Forget Inkster. It is a mess. Westland is a decent place also, but some areas closer to Wayne are not nice.
I talked about Garden City for pages and pages in this thread: http://www.city-data.com/forum/michi...my-living.html
Please read through it, it should cover a lot of your questions.
Garden City has a downtown area which is on the up and up and improving all the time.
It is definitely in your price range. If you find some houses you are interested in, send them to me and I can tell you about the neighborhood. Also I could get some to send to you if you want.
I went around and took about 70 pictures for someone else considering a move to GC, there is a link in the thread I posted and I'll post the link again: cardwellave - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting A lot of the pictures are of apartments instead of houses since that is what the lady was looking into..
I am VERY happy you are considering a move to our great city!

I like the way the city looks it looks similar to Detroit (im a good way). You can tell the way this city has age (also good way). The way it has side streets that criss cross instead of curvy roaded subdivisions, definatly a classic suburb. Looks like it is well kept up too. I love those bungalows in you photobucket page. Sadly i must say is that i might get moved to Seattle instead of Detroit , but if i get moved to Detroit i am very highly considering Garden City above the rest.

That's good to hear. GC is older in the many ways you said. It's not as nice as some older suburbs, like Ferndale, but it is certainly more affordable. And not only is it a classic suburb, but it was a highly seperated city until the 50s when the space between it and Dearborn/Detroit was filled in. Garden City was here before all the rest.

Cardwellave, I caught sight of this thread title and I knew you would be here. Garden City should be paying you for all your support. LOL
Much of my family lives in Garden City and it is a nice suburb, people take good care of their property, I don't see it as run down at all.

Haha, I'm more than happy to do it.
And yes, Garden City always impresses me compared to my own city of Dearborn Heights as to how well they take care of their homes there.

I read Garden City was starting a farmer's market. Do you have any info on that? I love Farmer's market's and GC is pretty close to me.

Yes, it will be starting in July and ending in October, every Wednesday 9am to 2pm.
I honestly don't know where it will be taking place. I THINK it will be in the parking lot at the Garden City Town Center (Kroger Shopping Center).
I really don't feel the hours are ideal though.

Yeah, those are difficult hours for most people. Oh well, maybe they will change it at some point.

There are a lot of run down properties. I have the misfortune of living next door to someone who's gutters are falling off....their lawn in the summer is nothing but 2 ft of weeds....it's not kept up at all. There are quite a few homes on my block alone who's yard is so horribly tacky & run down. I'm on the west side too...
Inkster...stay away from. Parts of Westland are really bad too. You really have to drive around & get a good feel of the neighborhoods.
