Actually this is pretty common now. I know in Maine they rely on snowmobiling during the winter months, they now require ALL snowmobiles to be registered in the state to ride the trails. Even if you come into the state for a one day ride.

I don't think you will find many places that cater to the recreational vehicles that doesn't have some sort of fee schedule in place to use trail systems. There may be a few left but they are getting further apart and harder to find.

Default Well, there's no such thing as a free lunch

Someone has to pay for the trails (building and maintaining them) and most everyone would agree that fees for use are the way to go - as opposed to using tax revenue (and raising taxes).

Besides, I have a hard time getting upset about this - snowmobilers, ATV folks - if you're going to spend $1000s on a machine, $100s on gas to ride, you can also afford a few bucks to support MI's awesome trail network.

That's the kind of investment MI needs - developing more outdoor recreation.

Okay,
My bad. I am an avid snowmobiler and have no problems paying to help maintain/groom the trails and since I'me really new to the ATV thing I did not know they did any kind work to the ATV trails in the summer months.

Default Speaking of ATVs

I have been wanting to try this, does anyone know a place not too far from metro Detroit where I could rent a vehicle and try it out?
