Arrow s/w michigan...

Have lived in Allegan, nothing wrong there - try and stay as far southwest as you can - to be closer to the Lake...Anybody's thoughts on that?

Portage - Biggest of the ones you listed. It's really just an affluent extension of Kalamazoo (the two cities have been tied at the hip for years). You'll be shopping in Portage no matter which of the communities you select. Great school system, some nice lakes.

Texas Township - A nondescript township. People generally identify themselves by their school district instead of "Texas Township." So you'll find some Portage and some Mattawan (anything else? I don't actually know)

Mattawan - Great schools. Grape country with new subdivisions popping up left and right over the past 10 years. This is the new Portage from a residential perspective. There are some nice inland lakes here too.

Paw Paw has a cute downtown. Schools are not as well-regarded as Portage or Mattawan but they're quite good. If you found that you liked Paw-Paw it'd be a great place to live and your kids would have a good education.
