Default Move to Southwest, MI

I am thinking about relocating to the southwest area of Michigan with my company and am looking for nice areas to live between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids? I don’t want to live in either city but within a 30min (or so) proximity to both. Any clean, friendly town greater than 5,000 people and less than 40,000 people is ideal. Any suggestions?

Check out Plainwell. Area population will probably go just over 5,000. Small town, nice folks, great schools. Wayland is another suggestion. I personally prefer a bit east of US 131, as it is quite hilly.

Allegan is a small town that would fit those requirements.

You could go with Rockford which is about 45-50 mins to Kalamazoo depending on how you drive... (I get to Kalamazoo from GR in 35 mins) and about 10 mins from Grand Rapids. Rockford has a nice little downtown area, actually has land behind your house and isn't really busy.

Check into Hastings too... it's hilly and woodsy between Hastings and Grand Rapids. Hastings itself has a population of 7,000ish ( Hastings, Michigan (MI) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders )

It's got a nice little downtown and it's close enough to metro-GR that you can come "into the city" if needs dictate.

Rockford is north of Grand Rapids. I think you wanted something in between.

Decent towns between the two: Plainwell, Otsego, Allegan, Wayland, Byron Center, Caledonia.

Allegan is 15 miles west of 131, but I like Wayland, Plainwell and Otsego. Byron Center is on the outer fringes of the GR metro sprawl. Still lots of country, but give it ten years and it'll change.

Cooper and Alamo townships, in N. Kalamazoo county, are very nice. It's halfway between Plainwell and Kzoo and lots of country.

In any case, the area between GR and Kzoo is really nice. Lots of farm country and good people.

Hope that helps

Okay so I think we have changed our mind and are now looking around the area just south of Kalamazoo. Such as: Portage, Vicksburg, Schoolcraft, Paw Paw, Mattawan, etc. Thoughts on any of these or surrounding towns?

I've lived in Vicksburg and Schoolcraft. I prefer Vicksburg a little more but they are quite similar. I think either would be a good choice. Both have good schools, they are clean, easy access to Kzoo, and lower crime than the other areas in Izoo.
