Lightbulb A2-Detroit Weather

Hey all, I've been living in Cincinnati for about 2 years now (moved from Chicago) and the mild weather has spoiled me I'm relocating to Michigan in August (probably Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti) but will spend alot of time in the Detroit area as well and I am wondering how the weather is, more specifically the winters. Does it snow alot? How are the streets when it snows? Traffic? Drivers? Snow removal? Many hills? Do most apartment complexes handle snow removal well? Do many flights get delayed (my job is 100% travel, I have to be able to fly out every week with no problems)
How are the summers? Does it get very hot? Rain alot?
Thanks!

The southern half of the LP had a rough winter this year. If I'm not mistaken, a lot of places set records for annual snowfall.

I wouldn't say it's any worse than Chicago, though. If you lived there you should have no problem with A2 or Detroit, especially where traffic's concerned.

This is Michigan!!! You know you're in Michigan if you wear a parka and shorts on the same day!!!!

Winters vary wildly. This year it was bitterly cold with tons of snow. last year, 1 week of real cold and hardly any snow. A few years ago it went up to 70 degrees for a week in February. When I was in elementary school it once snowed in June.

Summers get hotter by the year, and in Ann Arbor it is always, always unbearably humid and sticky. Detroit is much less so -- it always feels 10-20 degrees cooler because the humidity is so much lower. The closer you are to the lake, the better in that respect.

This winter it snowed a lot, but the snow did not stay around very long. Usually it melted in a week or less then we got some more. Very often it melted in a day or two. The weather bounced all over the place all winter. Poeple generally seem to handle the snow conditions very well. The snow gets removed quickly in most areas outside of Detroit. It is slow in Detroit if it get removed at all. There are almost no hills. Traffic is comparatively non-existient except up around Royal Oak, Rochester, Birmingham etc. Outstide of that area I have only encountered traffic once. Most apartments handle snow removal. I fly about 15-20 times a year. I have never been delayed more than an hour. Coming home I got stuck in Cincinatti airport twice due to weather, Once in Atlanta.

Black ice on the freeways will bring almost everything to a stop. I think we had black ice twice since moving here in late 2005.

The summers vary. The weather changes constantly. If you do not like the weather, just wait a little bit. It will change. Early summer is nice (June-July). Mid summer (August) gets hot and humid and lots of bugs. It rains often, but the rain makes everything cooler. Fall is the nicest time of year anywhere. It is absolutely gorgeous.

The only truely awful times of year at the later fall/early winter (Late Novemeber-December: everything is dead, gray and there is no snow to cover it up. Plus it rains constantly and gets muddy), and right about now (rain-snow-melt-rain-snow-melt-rain-snow . . . you get the idea). Everyting is muddy. Once the trees bud and flowers bloom, it is really nice. May is usually beautiful.

Winter is nice when we get enough snow. Nothing is worse that cold rainy windy winters. A few days are intolerably cold so that you will not want to go outside at all, this is less common than it was in the 1970s and 1980s maybe that is global warming.

Whatever you do do NOT get int he habit of staying inside except ont he really intolerable days. If you live withthe weather, you will come to like it. We love the big thunderstorms! The change in seasons is nice. The fall is just awesome. Late spring and early summer are also great. Winter is neat, but lasts too long. If you fly out a lot, it may not bother you so much.

Welcome
