Hey all.
My boyfriend and I are looking to relocate possibly out of Virginia and he suggested Southgate. I don't really know much about Southgate or the state of Michigan for that matter, other than I've seen some amazing pictures. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about Southgate with crime, the community, job opportunities. I know Michigan's economy isn't great, and I'm honestly a little hesitant since I've lived in Virginia or Maryland for my entire life. Not to mention I get cold easily, though i do love winter. But my boyfriend's family lives in Michigan and I've heard some good things. I guess I'm just a little intimidated from being so far away from my family, as they're in either Va, Pennsylvania, or New York.
But I do agree with my boyfriend and I'm open to trying something new and different. We're not looking for anything permanent, just a place to rent for a few years and probably get our lives set down is stone a little more i.e. i'll be continuing my studies in psychology and we're planning on getting engaged/married in no more than 3 years.
But yea, I'm still researching other places, but if anyone has any information that could help it would be greatly appreciated. And I should probably mention we plan on moving in January.
thanks!

I suggest you to move to TN, NC, Texas but not to Michigan if you are single mother.

Southgate is ok. It is pretty bland. There are some reasonably nice neighborhoods but not much exciting. Schools are OK, not great. THere is a loot of shopping places in Southgate and nearby Taylor. You might be able to find a retail job there, but it will not be easy. Good jobs (i.e.good pay and benefits) are quite hard to find.
Wyandotte is a lot more exciting, but the schools are not so good. Trenton is a neat little town and has better schools.
All of these towns are in an area outside of Detroit called "Downriver" The area is generally blue collar hard working decent people. Some areas are nto so nice You do not want to get much closer to Detroit than Wyandotte, although Allen Park is not bad. You need to come a look around for a while before you choose a place.
The nicest place downriver and the best schools are in Grosse Ile, but it is also considerably more expensive than the rest of Downriver. Not many Rentals on Grosse Ile and the few that there are do not turn over all that much.

Yes , try Marquette., the UPs largest city, clean , comfortable , affordable , and just outside , or inside , Marquette County , the states largest and wildest with many remote places. We have a lot going for us here. The UP is part of the Northern Tier , as is Washington State ,sort of. The Northern Tier always survives better in hard times , check it out.
I am from down state , just finnishing up my new home build on a mountain top over looking Lake Superior. This is where I stay , my final home, my choice as a retirement spot. Again , check it out !

Umm, not its not. No where in MI is thriving.
I've lived in west MI a year ago. Now I'm at east MI.
North MI is not thriving either. I'm up there a good portion of the year also.

South Lyon is a safe and relatively nice looking town. Lots of horses there and while home prices are going up you could still probably get something in your price range.

I 2nd South Lyon and would like to add Milford to that list.
If you have to move to MI, South Lyon & Milford are good horse/farm friendly areas.
I also HIGHLY recommend West Branch. My favorite town in the whole state. Have a cottage there for close to 20 years. WONDERFUL close-knit atmosphere. Everyone knows everyone. Great summer and spring parades. Lots of open land just outside the downtown area for farms. Cheap land, nice quality long-time owned small businesses. Good resturants, good shopping outlet, not too far from Traverse city which also has big festivities. Kid-friendly city, both of them. The local theater does not play R rated movies.
I did love west MI very much, but crime can be high in certain areas. Public schools are questionable in some areas. LOVE the lake effect snow but hated the lack of funding for pulling/ icing the roads.
