Check out Grosse Ile, MI (The Official web site of Grosse Ile Township Michigan). It is on the CNN Money 100 Best Small Town and has a Equestrian Center.

Holland has a high crime rate.
Grand Haven & Muskegon are beautiful cities.

I think you have every right to toot the UP horn. I like the Marquette area quite a bit. Nice place.

Why moving from California?? The lifestyle?

And, I happen to recommend either Rogers City (lake Huron side) or Cadillac(NW Central)

But, it really depends. What size city are you looking for?

We've lived in Charlevoix, Mi. for 34 years, raised our 5 children here and then off to college. They love Charlevoix and enjoy coming "home" whenever possible from Houston, Grand Rapids, Albany, N.Y., Stanton, (mid-Mi.), and Traverse City. There are job opportunities here, especially in the health care field. There are new businesses starting here and things are looking up. It helps that we're surrounded by lakes...Lake Michigan, Round Lake (right in town), and Lake Charlevoix. THE best place in the state.

I can that Ann Arbor Michigan is the best place in Michigan Plenty to do, progressive unique atmosphere, plenty of parks with trails, and something for everyone.

Ann Arbor! Beautiful, charming downtown, low crime, lots to do, nice restaurants/cafes.
Smaller towns surrounding are quaint: saline, dexter, chelsea

kalamazoo is nice, but sort of a ghost town and not nearly as charming as Ann Arbor.
Birmingham is also nice, but pricey.
