I moved up to Kalkaska from living outside the city of Jackson. I love it up here. There are plenty of bigger towns around but yet I am far enough away from them for the peace and quiet. Just lookup any cities you have in mind on the computer.

If you're looking for horse property and other horse minded people then the South Lyon area would probably suit you well. It's close enough to Novi by freeway that you can get to decent shopping and restaurants easily. You won't be in the middle of nowhere, but will still be able to find places with a bit of land for your horses.
South Lyon is a safe and relatively nice looking town. Lots of horses there and while home prices are going up you could still probably get something in your price range.

M ichigan does have alot to offer. Are you interested in being near any great lakes or inland lakes? How about creeks or hilly areas. Do you show the horses or just have them around?
The schools do have ratings through The State and communities also have grades assigned to them as well.

I moved here to Canadian Lakes, MI a couple years ago as a single mom with two children. I love it here! It is very family orientated, no crime, small community with beautiful scenery, a lot of lakes, golf courses, good schools - I am very impressed. It is a smaller town within driving distance to Grand Rapids, Big Rapids and Mt. Pleasant. I encourage you to check it out. I have lived in a lot of places and have no regrets about locating here.

Richland Michigan for a small town with low crime. Hillsdale, Coldwater, and other small towns mentioned truely are small, and also have a sense of the movie funny farm to them. I see amish folks everywhere, and it feels like I'm walking into the 1940's! Not exactly a good way to raise kids if you ask me, at least if you want them competitive later in life. Richland has a great school gull lake, a great lake if you can so afford to live there (600K on up) or affordable housing in the Augusta or Richland area. I'd stay away from Galesburg though, big difference. Private message me if you'd like more info on richland GL.
Other places I'd consider would be Ann Arbor, or Dearborn. I echo the sentiments about Holland being cult like, therefore I would stay away.

So much negativity about Holland/Zeeland here. It's ok unless you want to marry their daughters (then, all hell will break loose).
You were in Ohio for what reason? Business?

The Amish are great neighbors. They mind their own business, they take care of themselves, they don't commit crimes, they are not into drugs (for the most part), they don't have gangs. I'd rather have ALL my neighbors be Amish than be anywhere near Detroit or Flint. The worst thing they do is drive their horses down the road, thus making you something like maybe 15 seconds late to wherever you are going.

Dear Crannsi,
I grew up in Holland, Michigan and then moved out to California. I plan on moving back to Michigan in the near future. Holland is a great town to raise a family. The public schools there are excellent as well as the private school, Holland Christain. The town itself is small, but developing quickly. Housing in Holland is very affordable. I would have to say for a small town like this, Holland is pretty diverse for what is available in the area. The people are friendly and really down to earth. The Dutch atmosphere is a known attraction for this city, especially around May during the Tulip time festival. Summers are wonderful, and the city is located around Lake Macatawa and Lack Michigan. If you are ever looking to get away there are many choices, Grand Rapids, Sagatuck (cannot remember the spelling), Lansing is 1.5 hours away, and Chicago is 3 hrs.
I would like to emphasize one thing about education, Michigan's education systerm is by far one of the best. When coming from Michigan to California I noticed the difference, and for a child that is important. And as parent you want your children to be do well. Be sure to check out the schools, email the principals or teachers in the area. Woodside elementary is great as well as West Ottawa High School. One of the private colleges here is Hope College, a liberal arts school, but always keep in mind that University of Michigan Ann Arbor is also about 2 hours away, and that is an excellent school.
