Holland is very conservative . has more money in the bank than any other county in Michigan. Some very high end homes around the lakes. religion rules , and , unless you fit in , you won't like it there. Those Dutchmen are a strange lot , in my book....

Where do you think an Asian nursing student can fit in Michigan, was told that Baker college is one of the best nursing school in the U.S. Baker offers secure job search if you were to graduate from it. Any one?

I live in Marquette and I think it is the best place in the U.P. to live. Escanaba is O.K. too! Marquette has Marquette General Hospital check out MGH.org

I would second that , for Marquette. Some of the best health care in Michigan is right here in Marquette. A great place to live , no matter what your status. A place like no other.......in the lower 48.

Holland has changed; now the majority of people are not Dutch. There are a large number of immigrants (Asians, hispanics, etc.) It is actually a pretty diverse place although still pretty conservative. The cons: conservative, some schools are only OK, lots of opposing factions in the community. The pros: beautiful location (near the lake), lots of great people, places to recreate. There is a small college there, Hope, as well as many university extensions. Ranked as one of the best places to retire..

University of Michigan, while pricey, is a good school here in Ann Arbor. There is a large Asian community.

Hope College is an excellent school and Holland, MI has a very large Asian population (my niece married her high school boyfriend, who is originally from Laos). Grand Rapids also has many Asian people.

Baker's an excellent school. My sister finished her RN degree there and had a job as an ICU nurse offered to her before she even finished school. She lives in Macomb area: Shelby Twp, Sterling Heights. This area is so diverse that I don't think it'll be an issue at all no matter what color your skin is or place of origin.

I grew up in MidMichigan and can't believe I'm actually considering a move back for a year or two?!?! :/ This is going to be a serious timewarp having lived in Phoenix, Miami, Austin and Seattle.

Ann Arbor was a great place to go to college ..with a lot of diversity but the Lansing area is where I'll be living. I have a feeling it's going to be torture. If it weren't for my family being there..it would be pure h*ll for me, I'm sure!

As a kid, I didn't travel much. Since I may be going back, I'd like to see what I missed. Are places like Traverse City, Cheboygan, Escanaba and Marquette really worth visiting? Are they comparable to what the PNW has to offer?

Please let us know when you will be returning to Michigan so we can avert our provincial eyes from your worldly greatness. Wow - Phoenix strip malls AND Seattle coffee shops!

Perhaps you can teach us simple folk what this new fangled fad called "grunge" is all about.

...Get over yourself.

Yes, Traverse City and Marquette in particular are worth a visit. Go in the summer find some hidden beaches or dunes, some art festivals or music festivals or movie festivals. Grand Marais - very small town at the end of a 25 mile road on Lake Superior - has some gorgeous beaches, northern lights, and music festivals in the summer. Interesting outposts of civilization. Enjoy.

Hey..thanks for the intro and info "B.F."! <<and I don't mean BlueFly

I see you've spent some time living in Seattle yourself judging by the well- thought-out cleaverness of your remarks?! *argh..where's the "blowing a kiss" emoticon?!?!

The "village" where I'm from happens to be quite small without much happening. No stripmall and not one coffee shop to speak of. Little has changed in the 20 years since I've moved away. So "yes"..for me..going back to MidMichigan will be like a timewarp after living in some pretty large cities.
