Houghton Lake Roscommon Area
Hello, I am wondering about relocating to the Houghton Lake area, Roscommon County? Not very familiar with the area. How are the school system, housing...renting for the moment, and most important of all, job...I am a legal secretary and was wondering where I can search for employment in this area.
Any information will be appreciated...

All I know about this area is that everyone has a cabin up there. It's mostly touristville. I wouldn't expect many jobs up there. I really haven't seen any offices up there.
I think you'd be better off moving just north to Grayling, where there would be a few more jobs.

I grew up in that area (went to Roscommon schools). My mom still lives there and several other family members still have cabins there. It's very small-town, lots of people have cabins there, it's a weekend tourist/hunting type of place. As far as I know the schools have always been pretty good. It's not as small as it used to be, there are many more stores and businesses than when I was growing up. Jobs are not plentiful in that area. You may want to do some online searches for places you might be able to work before relocating there, just to see how many options there are. There's not a lot of jobs and many are low paying. You could try to find the newspapers from there online, the Houghton Lake Resorter and the Roscommong Herald (if I remember correctly their names).

Yeah, Houghton Lake area is a known tourist destination. T.U.T.is a snowmoblie festival during the month of January where everyone goes on Houghton Lake with their snowmobiles (provided the lake frozed over good!)
I have to say over the pass twenty years driving and visiting through there, it has grown quite some but i don't know if this relates to job growth.

Thank you all for the information provided. I will really look into this. What area, besides Grayling, is the most bigger and Roscommon, or more likely I could be able to find a job? I just want to keep doing some research. People say Im crazy, but heck..lets see what happens to us.
Thank you all and Happy Holidays to all.

Well to your south is Mt. Pleasant. To your north you'd have Mackinaw, The Soo (Sault Ste. Marie), Marquette.
The job outlook sucks pretty much everywhere in Michigan but those are the major northern cities. You might also try Traverse City or Alpena.

Hello Cmira,
I grew up in the Grayling/Roscommon area most of my life. I went to Roscommon schools through elementary and middle school, then went to Grayling Highschool and graduated from GHS. I havn't been back too often in the last 8 years, however, I do not think too many things have changed. If you are looking for employment I would suggest looking in the Gaylord area, Gaylord is about a little bigger than twice the size of Grayling and at least 3-4 times bigger than Roscommon. Gaylord is 30 min north of Grayling. You may also consider the Traverse City area, also much larger a better job market. As for the Grayling/Roscommon area, most people survive by owning their own businesses. If you do want to stay in the Roscommon area then maybe look into Houghton Lake? Hopefully some of that info will help. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Hi. I also went to Roscommon schools most of my schooling and then graduated from Grayling Highschool. I must say that the Roscommon School District was great. If I remember correctly they were a Class A school. They are far better funded than Grayling schools and I would strongly recommend them to Grayling. Grayling schools were ok but education didn't seem to be high on their list. Roscommon schools taught me far more cirriculum wise and tested more often.

I live in St. Helen Roscommon County, and it is great. We have a grade school here and also Gerrish Higgins in Roscommon is a great school. Lake St. Helen here is great for Blue Gill fishing. Then you have Higgins Lake which is a great lake about 13 miles but the real estate is quite expensive there. Then there is Houghton Lake about 13 miles and property and taxes are more there too. They are having some problems with their school system. I have a home for sale here in St. Helen if you would like more info e-mail me @www.npal1942@sbcglobal.net and I will give you the info of the agent we have our home listed with. It is a nice 3-bedroom ranch with and attached 2-car finished garage, and a second garage just to give you some insite. I am sure you could find a job as a secretary here. We have county goverment and many lawers. consumers engery in Houghton lake might be a place too.
What ever you do good luck with your move. NPAL

Roscommon area
First to look for jobs in this area go to michworks.org and search 48653 you can set millage your willing to travel. Now as far as schools. Roscommon school district is a good district. If you want more expensive look in higgins lake area, cheaper look in roscommon, or cheapest look in st helen. All are in Roscommon school district. As far as shopping, I would recommend west branch which has an outlet mall. For a large mall plan on at least an hour drive to saginaw or traverse city. I hope this gives you an insite on this area.
