This sounds all too familiar. I will be graduating in less than a year with a degree in elementary ed. (endorsements in early childhood and reading). I bumped into an acquaintance who graduated this year from the same university I go to and he says he's been unsuccessful in finding a job in SE MI. He's had a couple of interviews, but no luck. Plans to sub next year. He and his wife don't want to leave the state. My wife and I will weigh our options between now and the time I'm done at school. This includes leaving Michigan for a full time teaching job. The charter school route is interesting, but I imagine with all of the teacher layoffs (30 in my district and 16 or so north of here) it would be very hard to get jobs there. Unfortunately it's more of who you know than what you know. I know a lot of teachers around where I live and a few principals, so you can bet I'll be in contact with them. However I always worry that if I land a job here, will it be there a year later? Selling the house is another problem. Foreclosures near where we live and I think we won't get anywhere near what we paid for the house 8 years ago. It's a tough decision, but a necessary one we'll have to make soon. I don't want to leave this for the last minute, but at least have some idea of what we're going to do if I can't find a teaching job by next spring.

There are many senior teachers in Grand Rapids Public in Michigan that are making $100,000 also.
