Good advice, thanks guys. Rural thievery is very common where I currently live also. Luckily I have close neighbors that will watch my place for me while I am goofing off in Mich. If I buy a few acres i would not leave anything on it. I have a nice rv so i will bring everything with me and take everything back home.

I love Lake County for hiking and Summer fun. Anywhere from the Bitely area just south of there to the Wellston area just north of Lake County. It's all full of affordable small tracts of land near lots of lakes, rivers, and forests.

Since you won't be staying in Winter and don't seem to need city amenities, I would also suggest looking from Grayling to Gaylord, then east to Atlanta and Mio areas.

Same feel as Lake county but even less population, more wilderness feel.

I also lived in the Upper Peninsula for five years and loved it but I'm guessing you want to stay in the lower part.
