hi all!

does anybody on this forum frequent and/or live on Lake Allegan? i am looking at some kalamazoo riverfront property that feeds into Lake Allegan.

i've read about reports of an oil spill several years ago and possibly higher levels than deemed normally acceptable regarding phosphorus.

however, it seems to be a lovely lake from perusing images and from other folks' experiences.

i'm wondering if this is a good overall lake for water sports (thinking of getting a pontoon), swimming, and fishing.

ideally, my wife and i would likely rent a boat and spend a weekend on it in a rental, etc. to get a feel before committing to real estate.

thanks ahead of time for your insight!

The Kalamazoo River has elevated levels of PCBs due to historic paper mill industry contamination. I don't know the status of Lake Allegan, you might do some research or call the DEQ and see if tests have been done there. I know that downstream from there are signs that say do not eat more than one fish a month, or something like that. I have not heard complaints about E. Coli in that area. The general area is very nice, the Allegan State Game Area is a great wilderness area, and the Kalamazoo River downstream from the dam is very natural, despite the old contamination.
