The reason Michigan has such a bad economy is because too many people keep saying that it does!!!!! Don't you get that. As long as the whole state contiues to believe this it will be true. Its not the action that counts it's how you react. So if you sit around and think of the economy and how bad it is. It will be that way for you for a long time. And until we get that we will have this problem. If you keep SAYING there are no jobs here there won't be guaranteed.

Default Here we go again

So if you think you are not drowning you are not drowning.
I guess I will just think my retirement account is at 5 million and all is well.
How silly are people getting. This always reminds me of the commercial where the idiot on the cable tram says "I took a class in positive thinking we can get it started by happy thoughts"
But it is the guy that finds the restart button that gets it going. But as usual the idiot who was busy with happy thoughts who takes credit.
How many times can we tell you, you can not think your way to a good economy. You need to do something about it.
In the case of michigan there is nothing that can collectivly move the economy to prosparity.
You can move to a state that has an economy to make a better life. and let the people who think they can use crystals or positve thinking or haveing a store put cherry wine on the shelf make it better in michigan.

Right, but being pi$$ed off and negative all the time REALLY helps too, doesn't it?

Exactly.

I was just in Michigan about two weeks ago and everyone I talked to kept saying how bad things were and how they have more foreclosures than anyone else in the US, etc. Money magazine/CNN just released an article today showing Nevada blows the entire midwest out of the water with foreclosures. Even Arizona, where I currently live, is only 1 point lower than Michigan in foreclosures right now. There were plenty of states down here in the southwest that were equal to or worse off than Michigan's real estate situation. Even the hype about Wayne counties foreclosures I've seen on the news aren't as bad as they seem. There are cities in California averaging something like 1 in 70 homes being foreclosed on.

People need to get over the idea that the world is out to destroy Michigan.

I'm originally from Michigan and bought into the hype that we were all going to lose our homes and be bankrupt back in 2004 or so. I'm starting to think I made a mistake, because things aren't a whole lot better here in metro Phoenix. Crime is getting stupid and the cost of living is a lot higher. I make really good money and affording a house in a safe area for my wife and kids is not an option if I don't want to commute 2 hours.

I'm beyond the point of getting thoroughly pissed at Michigan's crappy job market and economy. Last year when I moved back here it bothered me but now, I'm like"f$#% it".

As soon as I get enough dough saved up and scout out some other cities around the country I'm packing up and moving away. I can't be living in fear of constant "forced early retirement" or being pissed off at a state my whole life.

Not worth it.

Default TO: anyone who has already relocated to MI

"THEWIND"... From HAWAII:::

This is what I needed to hear!!! PLEASE tell me how things are going for you...
I am wanting to relocate back to Michigan, after being away for nearly 21-years, and in communicating with people in the area I want to move to (Tawas City/East Tawas) I am getting the most negative responses, all doom & gloom and horrible stuff...

It's not like we aren't trying to plan ahead for the "just in case" scenerio... We plan to buy our home out-right (though after talking to some people, I'm almost scared to do that now) and I have 401k that I've always invested in, but don't want to have to draw from it early, unless absolutely necessary. My children's father passed away earlier this year, so they do recieve a monthly social security check of a rather sizable amount, so they will be fed & clothed, until the age of 18, regardless of my work situation.

I'm with you as far as internet work, though I'm only just beginning, and small-time, but I know that opportunity is there and plan to continue in that area.

Please give me some insight, advice, recommendations.... ?? Even if it's negative... Honest opinions & advice are NEEDED and MUCH APPECIATED!!!!!!!

I don't think I could disagree more. People's perception of a bad economy doesn't make a bad economy. Ridiculous state debt, Ford/GM layoffs, Comerica leaving, Volkswagon leaving, etc, makes for a bad economy.

It is pretty simple economics. When the jobs are leaving (to Tx, Va, Ga, China) then the people start leaving. Just look at some of the other posts in this forum. It's all about people trying to sell their homes, but can't. Houses have depreciated 11% in the past year alone. Meanwhile, our taxes will increase, which makes our cost of living higher and our quality of life will get worse because the state can't afford to keep criminals in jail, educate our children or pave the roads.

While perception is very important in turning things around. Money, or the lack of it, is what is hurting our economy. Sorry, didn't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but I got to call it as I see it.

lol okay well try living in california or new york. its not so much fun unless ur making like 200k lolol. i see ton of people earning around 50k here and housing prices are about a billion times of that in michigan lol. oh and other living expenses are cheaper in michigan as well in general. sure thre are wonderful things about cali too but hey all the states and countries have pros and cons, its just wat u make out of it, and if you are fine with staying in such a place, then bless you. However, if you dont like living in it because of ur personal reasons, i dont think its necessary for one to judge a city or a state for everyone in this forum :-P im movin out of cali for my job too but also i just dont like crowd of ppl in major cities and suburbs in cali which is my personal reasons, but i aint tellin no one not to move to cali or anything, im just stating my reason for a decisioin i made. ugh i hope i got my point across lol

The big 3 are laying off people left and right - thousands of employees. Our unemployment rate is the highest in the nation. Forclosures and bankruptcies are at an all time high. Between Oakland, Macomb, & St. Clair Counties there was a reported 260,000 homes forclosed on this year alone.

Where are all those families?? No public offical seems to know that answer.

Also, incase you didnt know - here in Michigan - there is no time table for people on welfare. They can live off our tax dollars for life.

So people, think before you move. There are no jobs here. Pull up 'The Detroit News and Free Press' online and look at the job postings.

Hope this helps anyone thinking about relocating here.

yes i strongly agree.
on moving anywhere. to assume that the next place is going to be just like this place or that there will be very minute differences in the next place, in other words, its all perfectly transferable knowledge is not so. it took me this long to get this good at what i do, and i learned most of it here.
yeah i took a few tricks from where i came from, but most i learned here and have gotten very good at it. when old people dont wana move its not they are old and tired. a cat may not have much territory but boy do they know the turf they got.
you are right think again.
