Listen, If you think that you are going to purchase a nice home in a nice neigborhood for 50k, you will never buy a home. Personnally I do not understand why anyone would want to live in Michigan. It is a dying state and bleeding jobs. However, if you want to live in Michigan, have stable income and plan to live in a home for 5 years or more this is the best time you will ever find to purchase a home in Michigan.

I have nothing to gain by stating this. I do not have a home for sale, I am not a realtor and I do not have any family in the real estate field.

I lived in Michigan for 39 years and moved my family out 2 years ago and the only regret is that I did not do it sooner. There are several other states that have a good economy, better weather, and affordable housing.

My advice is to get out of your comfort zone and do a little research. Without good paying jobs why would anyone whant to live in the Detroit area or Michigan?

You can find homes that are in that price range, although I've never been to the areas that these homes are, so I have no idea what type of town you'd expect to find there. Paw paw and holland have a few, and Detroit has a lot of homes under $50,000 ( I have been to Detroit and while its architecture is grand, the city itself is in shambles!)

You are right, you can can even find homes for as little as 10k in Detroit and you can find homes for 50k in detroit or in very poor rural areas of Michigan.

If you want to live in the hood, a poor rural town or in a remote area, then yes, you can find home for 50k or less in practically every state in the country.

You are right but prices will be higher too. Like I said many times, im self employed and couldnt care less if there was zero jobs, I work for myself and make my own money. Detroit doesnt interest me because the crime is over 900 and some years had over 1000! Also only about 10% of the population is white! Its mostly immigrants and blacks living there. The cheapest house is just $500 but its fire damaged as are most of the houses for under $5000. I wouldnt live there for free for many reasons. The small cities and towns are much cheaper and ive seen livable houses as low as $10k with very little crime.

There are nice houses in nice neighboors for $50k. Let me show you an example in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

I have a whole thread about this city. You can also search Realtor to support my point about affordable houses(just not in Florida!)

Yes you can find homes for under 50k. But you would have to live in places like Cedar Rapids. How many people wake up and say I wish I lived in Cedar Rapids. I bet this is not even a good area of Cedar Rapids.

besides you missed my point. Metro Detroit and the majority of Michigan is dying and bleeding jobs. Michigan has not hit the bottom yet. It will take a generation to recover and it will be a shell of its former self.

This is not 1970, you will not be able to walk into a factory and earn a middle class income. Their is opportunity in other states. Get out, Get out, Get out.

One big negative for Michigan is the strong union mentality. Same with New York, Penn. and the other rust belt states. These areas may take a long time to turn around or they may NEVER return to economic viability.

Business would (in theory) want to set up shop there because the low housing costs and existing infrastructure would help attract the needed skilled workers.

One thing Michigan could do would be to lower the property taxes. They are way too high. This country will have 10's of millions of Baby Boomer retirees very soon. We all won't be moving to the Sun Belt areas. They are getting ultra-crowded, stressed and expensive. We may see a portion of that retirement group wanting to move NORTH toward the lakes, safe small towns and recreation areas. Michigan HAS those. This movement is taking place in Minnesota and Wisconsin already. Why not Michigan?

These retirees will bring money into these areas again. The service economy will need to develop to serve them. I don't know where the state of Michigan spends their tax money but it sure shouldn't be going to welfare. That is just a waste.

We did that a few years ago by raising the sales tax. It cut my property taxes in half.
But in answer to the topic of this "Think hard before you relocate to Michigan". Like the guy coming to Battle Creek. If you got a good paying job lined up and you don't mind the winter, come on in.

Default No Future For Michigan

THERES NO FUTURE IN MICHIGAN.

yes, its a gorgorous state, but the state is falling apart. I read in one of the posts that there are jobs in other places besides Detroit. NOT TRUE. there are no jobs to be found anywhere. And just for the record of another post, ppl in Michigan DO use the internet. But getting back to the jobs, if you are thinking of moving here, think again. I was raised in Michigan and I am leaving. I am relocating because there are NO jobs and NO sign of change any time soon. Its sad but very true. Unemployment is at an all time High. Businesses are closing or going bankrupt, schools are closing, 2 million registered voters have left the state this past year due to forclosures or job lay offs or something worse. It is bad and getting worse. It is not exaggerated either. There are ppl here with college degrees that cant find a job!! So if you are thinking of coming here, be sure you have a SECURE job because otherwise, youll be in the poor house before you know it.!
