I would do a search and find Gaylord's local newspaper and search employment opportunities. I know Gaylord, like everywhere else in Michigan right now, is having economic problems and the employment opportunities aren't that great. However, since you're looking for the hospitality industry then you shouldn't have a problem. You can always get a job in that field.

Bay Harbor resort near Petoskey has been advertising for a lot of jobs of that sort lately.
Best of luck. I want to move home too, but finding a decent paying job up there is just about impossible right now. Can't raise a family on $7.00 an hour.

Thanks, I'll need it. My father is a contractor up there and he's even slow. He's always the one with work when no one else has it! I had asked him about the trades work up there and he said I'd be better off spending my time looking for a golden goose right now. Jobs just keep slipping away from that area and it hurts those already there enough let alone "Us" wanting to go back home...

We didnt get to make the move last year.....we are hoping to do it this June. We are still job hunting and crossing our fingers that we come across a caretaker or property management position.

As another person who dreamed of moving to Gaylord I wish you the best of luck. Gaylord is a nice little town with so much to offer people who enjoy the outdoors. If I were you I would look into Traverse City. You would still be within an hour's drive, still have good school's and a much better chance of landing a job. IMO.
With that said I do know they just opened a Miejer in Gaylord. I'd move to Gaylord in a heartbeat if this economy was not so bad. I'd agree with others about the work you seek being seasonal. They have had 2 great winters the last two years but winter still does not have the draw of tourism that summer has. If you have any experience in the restaurant field there is also BJ's down near the fair grounds. They always seem very busy and they are extremely busy during the summer due their catering service. Someone beat me too the Gaylord Herald post, but if you consider TC look up the Traverse City Record-Eagle - Home TC is much bigger with more opportunities. Good luck.

government jobs
You might try looking for government jobs. I know of some that'll be opening up soon, but there's going to be tons of competition. The unemployment rate up here has to be close to 20% by now. USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site is the website, or through michigan works. Let's all hope it gets better soon!
I've never heard of caretaker jobs up here. There's very little crime. Most people leave their house empty, or rely on folks like us (year-round residents with only one house) to "check up" on their place from time to time. There are so many people who'll take any job that I doubt you'll find something like that. It seems like every other able-bodied man is unemployed in these parts. Many women are supporting their families. Sorry, but that's what I see.
Maybe childcare or a pet kennel, health care? Those are 3 big in-demand services up here. I know of folks who have been able to find home health care aid jobs too. Good luck.

It's true things are bad up here (like everywhere). Even the hospital where I work is slashing jobs and hours, which I never thought I'd see because of the patient load we usually experience. I hate to discourage the OP if they want to be close to their family, but I can't lie.....this is not a good time to be moving to northern Michigan, where jobs are very, very scarce and competition for the ones that do exist is ridiculously fierce. So far I've avoided having my hours cut at work, but if it happens I'm gonna have to move because I can't afford any kind of income reduction.
But hey, if you are determined to make it happen I'm sure you can do it if you're willing to take some lumps. Family is a big factor in quality of life, so I'm sure it'd be worth it. It's not like the rest of the country is booming right now anyway.......people are scuffling from coast to coast, in big cities and small towns alike. Things are just not good.......very depressing.
Hmmmm......just noticed that the original posting is pretty old. Wonder if the OP can provide an update on how they made out?

MichiganMom, we live in Gaylord, although we're heading back to Cali in 3 weeks (economy is just too much for us)--but wow, it's so beautiful here, and the people are so completely friendly and helpful- I'm really going to miss that- we are, at the moment, on Otsego Lake- the newspaper is the Gaylord Herald Times, you can check their ads- there's also the Michigan Works place on N. Otsego Lake Rd.- Meijers is hiring at the moment, their set to open in April, I believe- and I've heard that 300 jobs are to be had-
Such a gorgeous little town, very Alpine-y looking, lol- don't forget the Chocolate Haus, omg....to die for, lol- and lucky you, you'll be coming when the snow leaves, this has been one rough winter, and we just got another few inches the other day- you're lucky in that you'll be ok, since you have family around- and oh, btw....the girls at Speedway are friendly and funny as well- LOL

Mostie...I know it is beautiful there. My parents bought up the old white birtch motel there on old 27 a few years back. It has taken a few years but my dad has done a great job fixin her up here and there. I dont think it will ever be a motel again, I think he is gonna end up with all his kids living with him again sooner or later! *L* My sister and her family already made the move up there last summer when her husband lost his job here when Merrillats factory closed their doors. We lived in Traverse City from 2003-2006 We had an awesome cottage care business but at that time my parents lived down here and my mom had some health problems that scared me and we thought we were gonna loose her....sooooo we packed up the kids, dropped everything and moved down here. Mom got better and they bought the property up there, then moved! I dont want to get into my whole life story but life just hasnt been the same since. We could kick ourselves for moving like we did, should have put a little more thought into it. Anyhow.....someday we will be back in northern michigan. I know we will have struggles where ever we are, and always be broke. But I love it up there and I really want my boys (3 of them) to be raised up there. Im gonna get emotional if I dont quit typing. I dont even know if Im making any sense here. I am just rambling on. I thank everyone for their replys.....It gives me hope.
