Default Moving to Gaylord Michigan

We will be moving soon to Gaylord to be close to our family...I was wondering if anyone knows of anyone hiring in the hospitality area. Hotels, Resorts, Lawncare, Maintenance, Cottage care, housekeeping, property management etc......those types of jobs are what we have experience in. Thankyou

Gaylord has a lot of hospitality industry type places, but they can be very seasonal. There are many golf courses in the areas, and quite a few hotels and resorts. Here's a link to the newspaper: Gaylord Herald Times - News, Sports, Weather and Entertainment - Front

It comes out twice a week.

I don't live in gaylord, so I'm not too much help, but I do live about 35 minutes way, and do most of my shopping there. Good luck.

Don't know if it's too far of a drive but Garland (golf course) just south of Lewiston might pay pretty well in the summer. It's a high end place.

Big buck in gaylord used to have a ton of business all year round but it's been dead the past couple of times I've been buy.

Try CJ's on the north end of Gaylord , they are alway's busy.
Talley's in Lewiston is usually pretty busy year round also.

good luck.

I can't wait til I can make the move up there.

Garland is the biggest employer in Lewiston... OK that's where I live. It's a pretty nice place (Garland), but geared toward major $$$, so I don't have first hand knowledge about it.. just know plenty of people who work there. It's about 35-40 minutes from Gaylord, and we have an awesome school here, but so does Gaylord.

Default Dont plan on it.

I have a few friends who worked in Gaylord, they worked at Boyne Mountain. It is a ski and golf resort 18 miles from Gaylord.
They said traffic was down 40% and it was very slow. I do not think they are hiring any new body's, they are not even able to keep their people who have been working there going, the Mountain is much bigger than many of the places in Gaylord. I also have a friend who works as a server at Big Boy in gaylord and was told that business was down 30%. People are moving out at a high rate if they are able.
If you go be prepared to have a hard time finding a job. The health care industry is the only thing that is doing well and that is because if you are sick you can not cut back.
Gaylord is a town that is built on the people of southern MI and OH going north to play, those days are over for now at least. I personally would not move to North MI, the winters can be long and very hard, with fuel going through the roof it is going to cost an arm and leg to heat, wood will be getting harder to come by as it was in the 80s when every one was burning.
The only thing that saved us then was the dutch elm bug that killed almost all of the elm and the state gave us permits to cut on state land, every week end in the summer there were trucks all over state land cutting down the latest crop of dead elm.
Also dont plan on the theme park coming into Grayling, I can not believe that any one with a brain would build such stupid thing in North Michigan. A waste of good money and material.

Jimoday....I know it doesnt look good anywhere here for us in michigan. The good thing about our move is that we will be closer to family. Currently we are 4 hours south of them and with gas prices and work schedules we hardly get to see them. That is something we are looking forward to....we are not rich here and doesnt look like we are gonna get rich up there. We have not made a final decision yet, we have a month or so to make up our minds. Its so hard to know if we are making the right decision...do we stay or do we go? We have 3 young boys to think of too. I was looking forward to the park comming in....I know it would bring lots of jobs, and tourists but in the same respect take away from the beauty of northern michigan and the real reason people travel so far to get there. My parents used to take us to Houghton lake camping a few times a year to ride motorcycles and relax on the state land....very quiet and a great getaway, years ago we went through there and they have houses everywhere....no tresspassing signs and I dont even think you are allowed to ride the trails, I dont know but everything I have known growing up has changed so much and its not for the better. It scares me to think of what the world is gonna be like for my children and what can be done. I feel so helpless and numb to the world changing around us, I just shake my head. Ok Im rambling and dont even know if Im making any sense. I will go for now.

Hi Michigan mom -

I don't have any advice, unfortunately; my husband and I are about to move back to Michigan as he got a pretty secure teaching job in Bay City, but reading all these posts, I am afraid of what I'll find. (I lived in Chicago for a decade and Mass. the past 3 years.) It makes me sad to hear about my home state being in such bad shape.

But about things changing from when you were a kid - I have an 11-month-old daughter and I too sometimes freak out about how things are going to be for her. But it helps if I try to remember that this is a universal human condition; I think throughout history probably all people are shaking their heads and thinking the world is going to heck. A couple of hundred years ago, the vast part of America was uncharted territory (well, to those colonizing it, anyway), and yet today we find it perfectly natural that it's carved into 50 states. Your kids will think it's perfectly natural that there's private property in Houghton Lake now too. I'm starting to realize part of getting older is watching your world change so much.

With that said, I get very down sometimes about global warming and whether my daughter will eventually run out of white Christmases, even in Michigan. And whether she'll need a cell phone at age 4 when I didn't get one 'til last year at age 34. There's tons to be freaked about! But also try to remember that there have been many vast improvements over the centuries as well. I'll take what we have now to being a child laborer in the Industrial Revolution any day. Everything is cyclical, and things will improve, but unfortunately in the meantime it seems the people of Michigan are doing a lot of the suffering. I have been gone so long that I'll be curious to read about the state's politics and see what's been going on. I'm actually hoping there's some way I can get involved, too, because I do love the state.

Anyway, I'm rambling too, but I'm hoping this was a little encouraging. It's easy for me to say because I haven't lived there in so long. Despite Michigan's economy, we too are moving to be closer to family, and I hope it's the right choice as well. Best of luck making your decision - big life changes are always difficult!

Greatlakesgirl...Thanks your post does help. My husband and I have always been pretty broke so Im used to just having needs instead of wants and my family is fortunate for what we do have cause I do know our situation could be worse. That is maybe what I fear. Comming to michigan will that put you closer to where your family is or are you moving away from them? See although we are kinda set where we are....hubby has good job, Im on unemployment right now though and we do have an apartment....kids like their school, but I feel that if things get worse that being closer to family will make things a little easier. I dont know. When we visit Gaylord I never want to leave, it makes me feel at peace. Good luck with your move and maybe michigan will get through this. I suppose everything happens for a reason, we just have to hang in there and hope for the best! thanks again
