This week through next weekend (10/20) is going to be peak fall colors for most of Northern Michigan
Next week into the following weekend will be peak for most of the Southern half of the state.

Now with a few hard frosts now, things will turn quickly.

Taquamenon Falls area is often particularly beautiful, but the colors there appear really early.

I am going to try to make a trip to TC or maybe Kalkaska or the Gaylord State forest. Should be stunning there by this weekend.

Yeah I'm headed north this weekend up to my parents place.

Colors may already be past peak near Gaylord, I was up at Shanty Creek 3 weeks ago and the middle corridor of the Northern Lower away from the lakeshore was already turning. Gaylord-Grayling-Mancelona area turns early since they get a lot colder at night away from the warmer air around Lake Michigan or Lake Huron.

The Keweenaw is tops - I was there earlier this month, and although the colors weren't quite at peak, they sure were gorgeous. Some of the prettiest I've ever seen.

Stuff sure started turning in the past few days around Ann Arbor-Brighton-Milford area. Granted still nowhere near peak but a lot of the maples started turning yellow in the past few days.

This weekend will be about near peak for most of northern Michigan. Really over the next week will be peak for most of the northern Michigan, but the weekend of 10/26 will probably start to past or all it takes is a big windstorm to strip the trees.

The weekend of 10/26 looks like it should be peak for much of mid-Michigan, Grand Rapids Area, and the northern and western parts of Metro Detroit.

The areas near the lake-shore always tend to be a bit behind areas a few miles inland due to the warmth of the water whereas inland they get a bit cooler night and have already had some nights with frost.

We made about a 6-7 hour circuit on Saturday. 696-23-75 to Saginaw, then we cut west on misc roads to 127 then north up to Roscommon State Forest then we cut back East on misc roads to 75 and back down.

We found a lot of fairly pretty pre-peak forests with some colors peeking out of mostly green forests. A very small area at peak. Mostly patches here and there. Other areas past peak and losing leaves. Those areas were still remarkably pretty because you could see through to forest in layers. There were a few places we had to pull over and just stare (also to let the dog pee and gallop about).

Overall it was beautiful and a worthwhile drive, but not the miles and miles of brilliant colors I have seen before. It sort of skipped from pre-peak to post peak. Fabulous drive and lots and lots of color here and there - just not the box of melted crayons I was expecting. It was the first time I have gotten my wife to try spending a day just to look at colors so I wish there had been more, but she was still amazed by what beauty there was. It was pretty enough I can get her to do it again next year I think, but we need to go earlier and go further north or go later and stay southish.
