Okay... local or national .. doesn't matter. What is the best restaurant in Traverse City and why? Is it the best value food-to-cost, or is it just the best food regardless of cost? What about atmosphere or theme?

For a 50's Diner feel hit Dons Drive-In. Absolutely the best chocolate malts on the planet! Great burgers and fries too.

Stella's is hands down the best in town. A different experience every time you go. It is in the old State Sanatorium and the owners have done a fantastic job with the atmosphere there. I go there every time I visit.

For Italian cuisine, Chianti's, on State Street, is the best in town IMO.

Food is so varied -- I think it's best to break it down by "best steak", "best fish", "best hamburgers" and so on.

If you're up for a little drive from Traverse City, check out The Rowe Inn and Tapawingo in Ellsworth. Excellent food, wine and staff at both places. Both big award winners and popular all over the world.

Stella's , Caio Bella, and Red Ginger are the best in Traverse City. Unfortunately, a Greek restaurant does not exist in the area. By & large, TC is still a burger and Mexican food town These folks go nuts for fried fish, burgers, & Mexican. Fortunately, people moving to TC from elsewhere are bringing more sophisticated palates. Many dive restaurants (U & I Lounge, Bubbas, Capones) still allow smoking TC is nice but still about 20 years behind the times.

Good malts but badly in need of a facelift. Dirty as well.

Tapawingo and The Rowe are world-class. I will agree. In fact, because they aren't big AAA 4-diamond or 5-diamond winners that rating system is a bit questionable to me.

They are easily as good as any place I've eaten in Michigan.
