I think your time would be better spent looking into what type of business would consider hiring someone a half an hour after recieving an E-mail from them.
|
Try GE...my hubby had a reply from them in about 45 mins after applying...wanting to talk to him. He ended up with a job making more money, better benefits, and a promotion as a result. Plus they paid our relocation back south.
NC is far from perfect but MI needs serious help. I heard the same thing over and over when people found out where we were moving...

Heard it over and over.
I haven't been away long enough for things to have changed and do know something about the area I left. IF the people have a job going into MI, it's a nice place to live. Liz

THANK YOU so much for posting that! We have pretty much decided that we want to move to the Nashville area, and we were terrified that we wouldn't hear anything if we sent resumes for out of state jobs. We have tried moving before without jobs lined up and we just can't ever do that again now that we have kids.
What type of job was it that called you back? I am curious. Basically I need to know how likely it is that my husband will be able to get a job before we move. I would be thrilled if he could get the kind of response you did.

I lived in Clinton Township for 2 years and hated being in Detroit because coming from San Jose for me was an "unculture" shock for me. I just moved to North Raleigh, NC have been out here for literally 3 days and LOVE IT!!! The roads are so nice here...I bought a Honda Civic and no longer have the fear of my car getting older before its time.
I didn't like the snow, the people, the weather in general, the roads, shopping areas, segregation, work environment, and the whole metro area.
I was in the gas station talking to the cashier telling them that I was moving out of state and was driving to NC and the cashier said, "WOW you are lucky take me with you!" Now when someone tells you to take them with you that has to be saying something about where you live. I have run into so many people who have said that to me... they questioned why I moved here from Cali in the first place. I have never met a group of people who actually were born and raised in a state and actually wanted to get the heck out of it. Even at my job people hated Michigan and their work environment. I miss the diversity of San Jose, Ca...but am soon finding NC to be just as pleasant!!! If someone asked me to move to Michigan again I would say no way Jose!!

I don't know if you can base anything scientific (or even non-scientific) on what a gas station cashier says. No offense to cashiers, I was a cashier in high school and college at a couple of places, and I would have given my right leg to be ANY PLACE other than where I was working at the time.
We contemplated moving to NC about a year and half ago and I sent out about a dozen resumes. Did not get one call back (I work in residential construction). It probably greatly depends on what your field is. There are companies in Michigan, depending on your skill-sets, where qualified employees are highly sought after.

i love michigan
I was born and raised in michigan. I come from three generations of general motor workers in my family, grandpa being a sit down striker. I have a lot of heritage and memories up in the north central area of michigan.
It breaks my heart to see my state in such despair, and really the lack of hope to survive. I seen the saginaw and flint area at the peak of all the auto industry and success. I really thought i was in a small paradise and one of the best places to live at that time.
I moved to indianapolis when i got married. I missed being in michigan so bad, but i knew living in indy was the best place for us. well when I separated from my husband i moved back home. I found how hard times were, and the cost of living was way to high. I lived there for three years and finally decided no matter how hard i wanted to stay i had to move back to indianapolis. It broke my heart, cause i really loved being close to my family, and enjoyed fishing, camping and jsut being home with my three kids.
Michigan needs a miracle, and I still pray that it will come one day for all those who decided to stay and make it work.
Unless you are moving up there for a transferr or have a job already there i say dont move. I put my resume in over a year and didnt have any responses. I had lost my bank job cause they closed down the branch due to low deposits.
Think hard and pray before anyone decides to move to michigan. no matter how homesick i get for my state of michigan, i know that i just cant make it living with three kids.

Michigan has all the ingrediants of a major collapse.
As I have stated in previous posts, there is nothing on the horizion that even has a hope of pulling out of michigan, I even heard Jeff Danials is moving to LA.

Well I just never felt like it was the place for me. It hasn't even been a week yet and felt like I wanted to post in this site..possibly for anyone who was thinking about moving...I did it and I love it. Been at my job for 3 days now and love it...so far so good. I know every state has its ups and downs but life is really what you make it no matter where you live...sorry didn't mean to be too cliche.
No but seriously Michigan isn't hell or anything, it's just that there are other places to live other than Michigan. I don't wanna put it down just felt like based on my experiences it wasn't the place for me.

First Post here;
I'm from Leamington, ont. (Just 30 min southeast of Detroit) and I love michigan. We cross the border 3 times a week for shopping; dinning and Tiger Games. I acutally enjoy downtown Detroit.
Just a quick post saying good luck and hang in there Michiganders!
Things will turn around (As soon as the auto workers union is destroyed!)

We just moved to Metro Detroit last summer so I could take up a position at Wayne State and we love it here. My wife grew up in Beverly Hills and went to school at CMU; I mostly grew up in Chicago but have lived around the world. We met in Crete while we were both living in Philadelphia - around 10 years for both of us in Philly. We go to Greece every summer for work. We spent one year in San Fran while I worked at Stanford. In short, we've been all over.
After a year, my wife and I have come to the consensus that the main problem with Metro Detroit is the addytude and wanderlust of a big chunk of the population - very similar to Philly. That's easy to see by the posts on this forum. We're actually happy that people are leaving. This will mix up the population and hopefully get rid of a big chunk of ignorance and defeatism. Smart people buy low and see opportunity when others do not, so MI WILL turn around and fill the vacuum. MI is not Baghdad. Philly and PA had similar pains in the early 90s when the city was bankrupt, manufacturing was dying, and people started fleeing - sound familar? Philly has now turned it around and we didn't do too bad buying RE in the mid-90s and selling last year!
I honestly feel bad for those who lost jobs in MI or can't find jobs. On the other hand, MI has been feeding at the Big 3 trough for so long that it's not surprising that good paying jobs with little experience or education are now elsewhere - 100 years is quite a run. People came to Detroit in droves in the early 20th century for this reason and now these type of jobs are elsewhere. If you have a good job, and I know many who do, and are getting an itch to move, the West Coast and East Coast are not all that they're cracked up to be. MI might be a bit further in the pack now, but it will never be as depressed as WV contrary to opinions here. If your job is not automotive manufacturing and you're in for the long haul, you'll be fine.
