That's funny, because somebody FROM North Carolina posted a msg here a while back asking about relocating to MI, because they said the job situation was horrible in NC and they couldn't find work so they couldn't wait to get out of NC...Go figure! |

My husband and I are planning to move away from Michigan this year or next. We have both lived here our whole lives and find that it now sucks- economy is horrible, housing market is the pits- but we are currently researching other states. It is a challenge to research other areas when you don't know much about them, but we are having fun doing it. We love the mountains, but want enough water and a place to garden. Michigan has the least sunny days, which I hate because of my seasonal depression. So, the hunt is on. I would not recommend anyone moving here. Look elsewhere!

Sure, Michigan isnt doing all that well now, but what do you expect? We are a manufactoring based economy. Despite popular opinion, Michigan is more than Detriot (which is only 1/10th of our pop) The Grand Rapids area which is the second largest city in a top ten most populated state is on an upswing. There is a ton of development downtown. The cost of living is low and the beauty of the big lake is only a half hour away. I'm a life long Michigander, and love it here, just ignore the east side of the state, and its a great place to live. People from the outside may think of the Detriot area when they think of this state, but most people from west michigan associate themselves to Chicago rather than detriot.(both about an 2.5 hours away) Not only is the Grand Rapids area a great place to live and grow up, (im 23 now) its a great place to raise a family. I live and work here with just a high school degree live a middle class life and love it. West Michigan, along with central and northern lower Michigan have alot to offer.

I agree that moving can be scary. I am a recent college graduate and am looking for a teaching job. I would like to stay in Michigan but I may need to leave to keep food on the table. I am a single parent and will do what I must.
I have heard that an area a lot of Michiganders are going to is NC. North Carolina has a lot of jobs and is a lovely place to live. Moving anywhere will take adjustment but if it means feeding your family then by all means do it! Do your research first and good luck! |

I was born and raised in Michigan, and although there is things I miss (family, friends, the lakes and hunting,) I would never go back. I moved to AZ, have a great job, the weather is pretty much always great, the summer is hot, (but u do get used to it). Jobs galore, great clubs, shopping, resteraunts....etc. I am building a 5 bedroom house, with pool, and 3 car garage....If i would of stayed i bet i would never have built a house like that. I have talked to friends to move here and they did and are very happy...... if anybody from Michigan wants to know more drop me a line and get the hell out of there!

My husband and I love Arizona. Every state has its problems and no matter where you go there is going to be something that you do not like. Michigan is pretty in the spring and summer. The fall is pretty, but after the leaves
fall its not so pretty. Winter here is horrible. I hate the cold and the lack of sunshine here drives me into a depressions. How can anyone like 22 degrees? We spent 5 days down in Florida for the Christmas Week and it was wonderful. Every day was sunny/partly sunny. There is nothing like getting up in the morning and sitting on the patio and watching the sunrise and its 75 degrees. I had much more energy. I will be in Phonix next month and I cannot wait. Also, in Michigan, the city of Detroit is wretched. I have traveled all over Europe where major cities were in complete ruin and they rebuilt them. Unlike downtown Detroit, people live and work there and feel safe to walk the streets all hours of the night. If I was young again, I would definitely leave. |

I mean really, who finds this attractive? ![]() BTW: Most of the country loses their leaves in the winter. At least we have beautiful snow to cover it up. |

We've been here over 5 years and would move tomorrow but our HOUSE won't sell...when the MSNBC's 20 coolest (as in the dumps) housing markets include almost nothing BUT MI, you know you have trouble. Yes, most of the country does lose it's leaves but most of the country is not suffering from this lousy economy. To the lady who teaches...do NOT look to the Detroit area for a job, they are closing over 50 schools in the next three years. And they are 200 MILLION in the hole. Liz |

I had to check back in to stop the blatant falsehoods being perpetuated on this forum. Please lay down the Detroit Free Press, go to google, type in "20 worst housing markets 2006" and see what comes up. Hmmm, I don't see any of the Michigan metro areas among the top 20. Then type in "U.S. housing market" and click on "news" at the google search bar (not "web"). Whoa, look at that. The whole country is in trouble. I'm sure you can find a couple of regions in the U.S. that aren't having problems. Few and far between. Good luck selling that home. Last edited by magellan; 01-11-2007 at 08:55 PM. |
