That's great for the western side, but what about the eastern side. I am only living here about 8 years. One thing I think is not helping is the old way of hanging on to the past. I even saw it posted somewhere on this forum that goes like " You could even make really good money without any college education, right out of high school." This leads to a under-educated state. The above statement works great for people like my parents who moved to the US from Europe, but for born citizens that were shown you don't need anything more than turning a screw and working 6-7 days a week, they are hoping that they make it to retirement. This state is truely a world unto its own. While the rest of the country seems to at least be doing ok, this state is on life support. I was told by friends that the economy here goes in 7 year cycles. I hope that they are correct for another one. I don't wish bad times for this state, but the times of getting $30/hour to turn screws are over for good hopefully.

michigan jobs
Not to sound snooty or to rile people up, but all the people on here thaat say or said they have good jobs. One question, are they secure, is there a guarantee. I woulld'nt be so sure that those jobs will be there in a few years. Companies come and go, people get laid off all the time. Sure you are always going to need people in the health field, but they are understaffed as it is because they don't have the money.

As long as people use electricty I will be employed. One thing about electricty, everyone uses it and it can't be brought in on a boat from overseas.
How about you kathys

Is there a REAL guarantee with any job? Is anything REALLY secure? I don't really get this question. Unless you are unionized (and God help Michigan for what the unions have done to it), then no...for anyone, anywhere!

I am a Reformed Mighigander...I now live In Florida where there are alot of others Michiganders..Florida is not in a good shape either, If it werent for the cold and the snow in Michigan i would move back...Michigan is Beautiful and almost everyone you encounter there is nice ...You can NOT say the same thing about Florida ...especially central Florida ...everyone is trying to out do each other here...
I don't think you can blame the union soley on michigans down fall.. you also need to blame the big 3 the exec that were getting tons of money yet everything was getting out sourced .. and then you have to blame GEORGE W BUSH! because the rest of the states are suffereing to maybe not at much as michigan but just the same suffereing....everyone wants to buy toyota and hondas because they are "better " cars ...yeah ok what ever ...I say YOU have Ruined Mighigan...!

I;d say there can be plenty of blame to go around, but in the last 8 years of living here, I noticed two things - redneck union mentality of " entiltlement" - born to deserve the best of all things just because you turn a nut and belong to a union. Second - Detroit being a so not world class city like Chicago or New York. Like people want to invest in a area like that. Not to mention it having no tax base to speak of. Michigan is nice in many other ways, but it has two ugly problems that will be hard to change. One will change when most of the nut turning jobs go bye-bye and you will get edumacated or go back south from where grandpa first came from.

I happen to think Michigan is a great place. The problem is that the state replies on the auto industry way too much. This also has an effect on the western side of the state not just Detroit. Michigan is the only other state I could see myself living in, and this is from a person that has been to all of the lower 48 states. I am a descendant of Michiganders, and go every yeear to Grand rapids or Detroit. People that I know from Michigan are some of the tightest knit people you will ever meet living in a different area. I think a lot of what scares people off is the reputation, and that people that do not know anything about Michigan associate everything with Detroit and the problems there. Some people even go back to the race riots to fuel their opinion. That is a major hurdle as well, and you only need to drive into Detroit to witness that. You see the neglect that entire city blocks have faced, and how many people on that block even think about doing their part to change it? We took my grandpa by some of his old houses in Detroit and he told us to get him out of there because he could not stand to see what it had turned into, and he is not the only one. Sure every city has declining parts of town, but you look at Detroit and it seems that 90% of the city is like that, and it is just going to get worse. I know some people that live in Eastpointe that want out now because some of this has started to affect their neighborhoods. Michigan is a great place, but put it like this, as the auto industry goes, so does Detroit, and as Detroit goes, so does Michigan...I drive an american car, and wish everyone else would, but that isn't going to happen. People keep telling their friends/relatives abotu how they will never buy american cars and then that just spreads. Who suffers? The folks in Detroit, and yes the american cars have a bad reputation, but I think that is based more on cars from the 70's and 80's. Heck my '96 Ford has 225,000 miles on it with no issues other than the fuel pump, but do you think that is going to change anyone's opinion? All these foreign automakers keep showing commercials with their plants in america, but in the end the money all goes right back to japan.

I'd rather have Michigan-like unions than pay for unions that are worthless (ie Clark County Schools union, Florida School Unions, etc).

They do in comparison to Michigan schools. But at least they don't have overcrowding and layoffs.
