How bad do you think MI really is? (Detroit, Wayne: relocation, homes)

I probably shouldn't have mentioned Galveston. The historic sections and the big old houses are really nice but when I went to the pier the whole area, including the beach, was filthy with litter. Granted, this was only a week after their Mardi Gras festival, but still. Sorry Galvestonians.
As for Austin, even though the influx of techies (not a bad thing) have greatly diminished the 'hippy' flavor of Austin, I still think, in terms of quality of life, its the best Texas has to offer. My cousins down there claims San Antonio is the new Austin (Hot spot) so who's to say.

It seems to be like that in just about any field that requires a college degree. It's certainly very true in my field and perhaps more so.

Michigan is not that bad, yes jobs are somewhat not what they should be but michagan is a beautiful state, it has a lot of good things to it, it is just the people of Michigan have let it go, it has so much potential and the jobs are bad because the companies who just happend to start in Michigan, decided to leave the whole COUNTRY not just state to state, parts and labor were cheaper in a different country, not state, i am sure they would of left no matter what. companies are laying off people because they technology is getting better and better, they have one robot to do they work of 5 people, to them it is cheaper to do things that way. it is going to happen anywhere you go, you need an education to make it in this country, because robots can take over the physical labor, but not the mental labor, that is one thing they wont ever be able to do is think. it is something you have to to decide on you own, advice can effect it but it cant determine what the better choice is, if everyone in this state chiped in to make it a little nicer and better living, then we would be the state everyone wants to live in, also there are ALOT of rich people in this state who should help out but are only concerned for themselfs. they way i see it you are damned if you do and damned if you dont and not everyone is a farmer

Hey...the time is right..the time is now...it's just a matter of WHERE?!?!? I have read almost ALL 25 pages of these posts.... the OVERWHELMING majority are negative, and from personal experience. Let those who can handle the horrible economy, depressing winters, lack of general hope, and car-destroying roads deal with it. We'll be back to visit whatever family and friends remain. Michigan truly IS beautiful to visit. But I can take in pretty much ALL the positives it has in a week's visit, and enjoy our life somewhere else 51 weeks a year.

Hopefully we will will find a growing, DIVERSE (where the people actually interact), metropolitan area, with a real public transportation system where we might actually want to have kids and raise a family.

We'll see you all on when we visit mom and dad!!!

Well I am originally from San Jose, Ca have grown up there. I moved to Detroit in 2002 to be closer to my family and spend more time with my absent father. I also graduated from Wayne State...and only went to that school because it was close. Sad huh? I lived in Clinton Township for 2 years and hated being in Detroit because coming from San Jose for me was an "unculture" shock for me. I just moved to North Raleigh, NC have been out here for literally 3 days and LOVE IT!!! The roads are so nice here...I bought a Honda Civic and no longer have the fear of my car getting older before its time.

I didn't like the snow, the people, the weather in general, the roads, shopping areas, segregation, work environment, and the whole metro area.

I was in the gas station talking to the cashier telling them that I was moving out of state and was driving to NC and the cashier said, "WOW you are lucky take me with you!" Now when someone tells you to take them with you that has to be saying something about where you live. I have run into so many people who have said that to me... they questioned why I moved here from Cali in the first place. I have never met a group of people who actually were born and raised in a state and actually wanted to get the heck out of it. Even at my job people hated Michigan and their work environment. I miss the diversity of San Jose, Ca...but am soon finding NC to be just as pleasant!!! If someone asked me to move to Michigan again I would say no way Jose!!

Oh one more thing; typically how long does it take to obtain a job in other states (this is a question for anyone, not just previous poster)? I did a little experiment of my own. I put out a ton of resumes here in MI and only one in NC. Well I never got a call back for anything in MI. but within a half an hour of emailing my resume to NC, I got a call back! A HALF HOUR! I was shocked! Now tell me that was just a fluke. It can't honestly be like that everywhere...can it?

Rather than bashing Michigan I think your time would be better spent looking into what type of business would consider hiring someone a half an hour after recieving an E-mail from them.
