Default 3 Off the top of my Head

I'm not sure what you consider 'small'
but these are a couple of my favorites
within your travel range. (And one that
might not be.)
Lake Odessa is a sweet, quite little town
next to a beautiful lake. (about 2200 people)
As far as tiny towns go, everyone I know seems
to like Lake Odessa.
Personally, I've always found Hastings to be my
idea of a 'classic' small town. In the past Hastings
has been named one of the 100 best small towns
in America if that means anything to you.
My dark horse pick is a quiet little college town
called Alma. (10,000 people) 20 miles south of Mt.
Pleasant. Everytime I've gone there to visit my
friends I've always been taken with how quaint
it seems. The College is beautiful and the town
is loaded with trees and brick houses. My friends
love it. On the negative side, I'm not sure about the
job situation. Apparently there are LOTS of houses
for sale.

Default recommend williamston

I'm from Williamston and it's a nice little town. Lots more college educated, trying to make things better. Known for antique stores downtown, close enough to Lansing to be able to have services but far enough away to be small town. I remember walking from the elementary school to a girlfriend's home after school kicking up the crunchy leaves with my new loafers for Brownies. Marching in the 4th of July parade in hot band uniforms, playing the flute in the marching band at the football games . . . hayrides, the annual town celebration, the ice cream shop . . . the Red Cedar River . . .
not sure about housing prices but I'll bet you could find a deal.

Unsure if you've relocated yet but I have to agree with Wabbit. Lake Odessa is an affordable small town. I live about 6 miles east of there and love to take my kids there in the summer to swim. The lake is beautiful and the people are friendly. I think it would be a great place for you and your husband.

Just north of the city of Alma is a town named Shepherd. Take a drive through there. Very quaint, clean, friendly little town. Close to the expressway so you can be in Mt. Pleasant in minutes or Lansing (the capitol) in just under an hour. I think you will be pleased.

Edited to add: Sorry, I just read some more of your posts and see that you are familiar with Michigan and where/what the capitol is! LOL
