Oh, Mackinac Island..one of my favorite places being I was married there! I think July is great, warm days and still cool nights (always depends though..weather is tricky up there). Our favorite place is to stay at either The Summer House or The Stonecliffe Cudahy Manor, both next to each other. Off the beaten path of main street, located on western bluff near airport..so quiet, peaceful and romantic..worth the two a night cost, REALLY!!!! Enjoy..it's beautiful up there! Staying on the island can't be beat..worth every penny.

Everyone should visit the Island, at lest once. The memories will be with you always, some great, some not, but , ether way , it IS a special place.
My best memories , were really living it up , staying at the Grand Hotel, vintage cognac, cigars, on the veranda, after dinner, dressed in out tuxes , and the ladies in their evening wear....... Then the ride around the island on a rented bike, in the rain...... Great times.

Yes. It is a special place -- something fun, a break from camping out and canoeing or tubing down quiet rivers or hiking back to waterfalls.

The ferry ride over is cool in itself. You get an amazing view of the Mackinac bridge, and you get on the island itself and are amazed by the huge number of people. Tourists everywhere, tourists shops everywhere. You can walk around the whole island, and get away from the crowds, and find the stables where the horses are kept and given a day off.

It is really a worth while trip -- like you said at least once but most people would want a couple more times than that. Certainly people who would go all the way to Disneyland would want to experience Mackinac Island especially if it's much closer.

I worked at the Chippewa hotel many moons ago during college summer break. i have to say that if you can splurge even just for a couple of nights, staying on the island is the way to go. Once the fudgies go home with the last ferry, the island is beautiful. Romantic walks along the pier, watch the sunset, live entertainment in the pubs are a few things I enjoy about the island at night. My dh and I have stayed at B@Bs when visiting Mackinac and we have really enjoyed it. Mission Point is probably the nicest hotel but pricey. Have fun!

When we finally decide to make our trip to Mackinac, is there an airport close by?

Would it be better to just fly inyo DTW, rent a car and drive the 4 hours?

I'm kinda concerned, as that's a lot after getting off the plane from Phoenix.

It would absolutely be cheaper to fly into DTW..., but if you are not worried about money (like i am! ) then the closest airport is Pellston-which will be the most expensive! then Sault Ste. Marie Chippewa airport-second expensive but still within an hour to an hour and a half
then Cherry Capitol Airport in TC-which will be the better of the three-lets just say though i was looking at flights to fly home for my best friend's wedding and from philly into TC it was over $500 so I am driving!!

hope that helps

If it was me I'd fly into Detroit as well. You get to see all the beautiful Michigan scenery (and of course Detroit, which in my opinion is beautiful in its own way).

haha, sometimes when i am broke and i make it to the island-an interesting place is the mustang-kind of a locals place...but if you still want good food and casual-most places on and just off main street are casual-pink pony bar and grill-has a nice patio bar area, yankee rebel, horns has good food-and if you spend the night good entertainment later, bistro on the greens is away from the downtown area at mission point-outdoors very nice-still casual but yummy and beautiful setting, and the irish pub-those are places i continually go to when i'm on the island-of cousre many inns and hotels have their own restaurants so you'll have no trouble finding good casual food! if you still want some of the grand hotel experience- the grand golf course across the street has a restaurant-i've eaten their for lunch-business casual and not toooooo expensive
