Are you asking about moving costs? Hire people to load and unload the truck for you and use UHaul. I paid some guys $20 an hour to move my stuff from the truck inside and they finished in no time. I put an ad on Craigslist. To rent the truck was a few $100. But, if you are moving north, they are DIRT CHEAP. I guess UHaul has to send people south and have them drive the trucks back north. So, you can get good deals if you are moving north!

Grayling is a beautiful area. I grew up in Antrim County, just about 30 mins from Grayling. Unless you are independently wealthy (no need for a job) or have some sort of craft that you can sell to the flatlanders and on eBay, I'd just arrange for a visit once in a while. There is NO work up there. (I live in Lansing now) I keep up with my dad on the local job scene as I'd like to get back up there too. But even having pretty deep roots in the area isn't helping anyone out right now. My best friend from school just moved to TN and found work in a couple days (good job too!). For the past few years I've had other friends move from there due to the lack of work and gone out of state and got jobs right away.

The housing market EVERYWHERE in Michigan is crappy. You can pick up a place cheap enough up there, but the values are all down and probably won't turn around for a while. No equity building going on here. We just bought a place in July and it's value has already dropped 15%. Had we held out a few more months, we would have been able to buy twice the house if that tells you anything.

And no offense to any N MI teachers, but your "genius" wouldn't be challenged in those schools. Great teachers and all, but it's not the most challenging ciriculum. I held a 3.9gpa throughout my senior year and missed over 35% of the school year if that tells you anything. I was bored and needed more, but they just didn't have it due to funding. So I just went when I felt like it. I'm no genius either, just a really good example of mis-directed intelligence.
