We are looking to move to the area and have read about the PFAS issues around Clark Marsh. Is the city water infected as well? Where would be a safe place to live in the area?

Default Oscoda PFAS

Greetings Wooly,

The general feeling among those of us living here in Osocda is that the issue of PFAS was badly hyped by the media and that we might not be in any more danger than people living in thousands of other towns in Michigan and elsewhere.

I know people who live on Van Etten Lake, close by the old Wurtsmith air base where the pollution originated. For the most part they have not hit the panic button. Investigations are still ongoing, at least they were as of last summer.

Personally, I don't know the actual, real dangers involved with the groundwater pollution, which has been reported for other chemicals in addition to PFAS. And I'm not sure anyone else knows the real dangers either, including those yelling the loudest and those making the many investigations into the problem.

I have not heard that city water was affected. Given the unknowns surrounding the PFAS uproar, I would personally play it safe and NOT purchase a home or rent housing on any property that relies on groundwater wells as a primary water supply. Since the public was first made aware of the problem, I believe an effort has been made to get city water to areas affected.

Feel free to contact me via personal message if you have other questions.
