Ypsilanti is a smaller, somewhat quiet little town between Ann Arbor and Metro Detroit. You could find a lot of interesting things to do in Ann Arbor or Detroit, or both! What sort of things do you like to do?

Might try the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn during mid-week when there is a smaller chance of large numbers of people. Great place to bring kids, and there are some very nice trains and cars there for your son as well. It is a very well rounded museum that I love bringing my 4 kids to. Here is a link to the museum web sites exhibts: Exhibits

Second that. Might consider Greenfield Village as well and the Rouge Tour. Make a day of it all.

The crowds aren't TOO bad. The Rouge Plant Tour takes a bus from Henry Ford Museum so keep that in mind. It's about 10 minutes. It is really great for car fans, and along with the museum, is probably the greatest car oriented attraction on the planet.

No trip to Detroit is complete without a visit to the casinos, especially MGM Grand. That said though, they are extremely crowded and I'm not sure if they allow youngsters.

If you want to take advantage of exchange of exchange rates, the best malls in Detroit are probably Somerset and Great Lakes Crossing, both in northern suburbs.
