Not to be Mr. Negativity but....
Charlevoix, Michigan (MI) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders -8.9% Population change...I think that sums it up, although if you are one of the fortunate families to have stable employment, I think the point many are making, is that most are not. The "auto industry" is not confined to any region in Michigan, as there are companies across the state that provide parts for auto related purposes, what is booming so much in Chralevoix besides tourism?

It's awful...
I live in Saginaw which is like mini-Detroit. Just go down Bay Rd., the main business artery, and it looks like a ghost town. In fact, there's a website devoted to all the closings titled "Saginawforsale.com". It's truly depressing. But I don't think it's just Saginaw...all of Michigan is in trouble. Too many jobs have been outsourced (mine included) in this state and not just the auto industry. IT jobs, medical transcription, phone company jobs, etc. Gov. Granholm promised all of us that she'd blow us away. Yes, she truly did.

My IT job was outsourced last May and I'm still looking for another job. The competition for whatever jobs are available in this state is fierce. I'm continually told by even TEMP firms that I'm overqualified for the jobs that they have available. Where I live, the unemployment is at 8.5 percent. If it wasn't for my husband's job being located here in MI, we'd be leaving the state. It's pathetic.

I believe several things need to happen and it needs to start at the top as in housecleaning of all incumbents. This state should give out some interest free loans and relocation assistance to lure companies here to create jobs. If they can get companies to move here give them tax credits to not use temp agencies. Some of the temp agencies are just a shell company for much larger corporations who are paying themselves to screw the worker. They need to repeal the ridiculous taxes on cigerettes that made a pack spike to $5. It cost me as much as a car payment to maintain my habit, monthly, that's money I could be spending at restaraunts, the local hardware store, the hobby shop. Instead you drive down the road and see places like this boarded up.
Business leadership needs a reality check. Michigan seems to have a problem with not hiring the best people for the job. I have over 10 years experience in the printing industry, am very qualified, and once they see that nasty 7-letter word, Florida, on the resume it hits the trash. Meanwhile I'm on a plant tour at an interview and see some gump who wouldn't be fit to operate a fryer at the greasy spoon running the same $1 million machine I ran in FL at 5 times the speed. The nepotism up here is unbelieveable. A temp service sends me too a factory awhile back and heres this 18 year old kid supervising a department. I mention to another temp he looks a little young, the temp agrees and hes dumb too, but his dad is one of the higher-ups in the Co. To much of that going on.
One way I get my satisfaction is all the products they manufacture over here in West Michigan like grape juice, prescription drugs, otc meds, etc.,I don't buy them. They wouldn't give me a job anyhow. As a matter of fact I buy as much as I can online from out of state. That's what the leeches in Lansing get for jackin my cigarettes up.

*sigh* here I go again, explaining why my life is good and I LOVE where I live. My husband works at EJIW, they are expanding, buying other Foundries and have tons of over time , things are great for them and us right now. I dont care what stats you care to throw out here, I live on 35 acres, back in the woods about 12 miles outside Charlevoix. We have never been happier, more at peace and more secure than we are now. I understand how fortunate and lucky we are and I thank God every day for it. I LOVE Michigan and would never think of living any where else.

What kind of IT work to you do? I don't know the first thing about it but my husband works in IT. His job is secure, lucrative, and he's happy with his company. However, he gets emails/calls weekly from people looking for him. He's pretty much gotten a job for all of his friends and even a few acquaitances that were looking, there's nobody left we know that needs a job, lol.
I'd have to ask him first, but if you are truly an IT person looking for work I could give you his email and he could pass along his offers as he doesn't need them.
Not only would it be good karma for me to help but I'm so tired of hearing about how terrible things are here that I'd like to show people that no, the sky hasn't fallen, lol!

I worked for the malpus family, they built the east jordan country theater, I did a lot of work in that thing, it went belly up. Now a church or some such thing.
Flake, I know for a fact that the family is buying and setting up factorys in Alabama where they can get work done cheaper, so good luck with that. As building shuts down across the nation the sewer lids they make will not be as sought after as they were a few years ago.
I lived and worked in your area for more years than you would know. So dont snow the snowman sister.

As building new subdivisions slows dramaticaly, you will stop producing all those EJIW sewer lids you see around the country. Since they do not go bad very fast and last many years I think you will see a slow down in the factory in East Jordan.
I love how some people think they are not going to be affected by the current economic trouble. I would not want to bet on flakes future.

Mmmm, yeah, ok, its Malpass first of all and of course they have a foundry in Ardmore, also in a few other states as well.....you dont know jack, stop trying to rain on my parade. You are just jealous because you dont have a secure job, a great home to live in and a wonderful family. Guess you cant stand to see someone else happy, too bad. Spout whatever nonsense you need to to make yourself feel better. My husband actually works side by side with the Malpasses, I think I know just a bit more than you do.
