Before "Grand Traverse Common"..
I accidentally came across 157 pages of records for TCSH, dated 1800's.
I'm a former patient from Treaverse City State Hospital, Bldg#50 Hall#18, "1961", age 7.
Is any one interested in what went on behind the walls back then? (DM me)
One rule all patients were taught there was: "What happened in TCSH,--Stayed in TCSH"
check the dates
NORTHERN MICHIGAN ASYLUM, TRAVERSE CITY.
JAMES M. MUNSON, M. D., MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT.
(1,009 patients, June 3O, 1898.)
The population of this institution at the close of the present biennial period shows no increase over that of two years ago. Still the number cared for is beyond the normal capacity of the asylum, and additional room is needed. The further enlargement of the asylum as an "asylum" is not favored, but rather the construction of hospitals for the acutely insane of each sex, in order to make the institution in the fullest sense a hospital for the treatment and cure of the insane.
Each succeeding period brings important advances in the knowledge of psychiatry and in the methods of clinical examination and treatment of the insane. Clinical examinations now include bacteriology and psychical examinations, which, until recently, were quite unknown. In order to keep pace with and share in this scientific movement in behalf of the insane, the boards of the several asylums and the Regents of the University have established a pathological laboratory at the university, and a pathologist has been employed to take charge of and direct the pathological work of the asylums. During the brief time this department has oeen in operation very satisfactory results have been obtained.
Occupation of patients continues to be an important factor in their treatment, but as the clearing of the farm is nearly finished, new industries will need to be introduced to avoid enforced idleness.
On June 30, 1898, there were in this asylum 552 men and 457 women, a total of 1,009 patients. The total number of patients under treatment during the period was 701 men and 618 women, a total of 1,319. This shows a decrease of four patients since June 30, 1896. On June 30, 1898, there were about 30 patients awaiting admission to the hospital................

Incredible! And it doesn't look like it was too windy (the Straits can be quite blustery).
