Donkeys?  Yikes, that may get a little smelly in the heat also!
I have stayed at the State Park, but you have to reserve early. It's good as far as State Parks go.
The year that pic was taken we stayed at Sandy Shores campground. I thought it was very nice. Clean, the mgmt was friendly, they raked the sites every time someone left. Bathrooms were clean, they had a pool and lake access, but the beach area wasn't that great. It was within walking distance to the little town where we did go-carts, putt putt and had great ice cream. You can look it up at Sandyshorescampground.com. Hope that helps. We stayed in the front of the campground and it wasn't too noisy.

and these photos are from when we took a QUICK trip to the UP just to go visit one of my favorite beaches along US 2....
of course it starts with the bridge towers on our way up then ends with our view of the bridge on our way back to cheboygan 
enjoy!
