Moving to Lansing...need advice
Hi all,
I am planning on moving to downtown Lansing in the next month with my husband and renting a house as close to Sparrow as possible. However, after stumbling upon this website, I realized that some of the neighborhoods in Lansing may not be so ...attractive to live in.
A couple places we're seriously considering are on Rumsey and Magnolia streets. Can someone please comment on these neighborhoods?
Thank you in advance!

Well Lansing is undergoing contruction,
Look into these two sites: The Stadium District
and
Welcome to the Beaumont Life
they are not that far from Sparrow, I'll say about walking distance.

I actually looked at those and they're a bit out of our price range (by a couple hundred dollars). Thank you for the recommendation though. Do you know anything about the neighborhood around Rumsey st.?

You might try the area around Kipling, La Salle and just east of Francis Street towards Frandor. Nice homes, lots for sale that may be rentable and a fairly safe and quiet area. The neighborhood might be called LaSalle Gardens, and although a LONG walk to Sparrow, it's an easy bus trip from either Michigan Avenue or Saginaw.

It might be; I'm not completely sure. It doesn't strike me as one of the "bad" areas of Lansing, although I haven't lived there so I really don't know. I guess I wouldn't rule it out.
Also, do you want to live near Sparrow solely for the proximity or because you won't have a car? Unless you need to travel during the night, there's a reliable bus line that could take you from Sparrow all the way out to East Lansing and even into parts of Okemos. Although downtown East Lansing is populated with students and might not be what you're looking for either, there likely are some rentals near the bus line (on Michigan Avenue and Grand River.)

Lansing isn't the best area in the world, especially since the economy in Michigan is having such a hard effect there. From my perspective: I am in the process of moving back to the Lansing area after some time away and am having trouble deciding where to live; I'll be working near the capitol, so Lansing would be most convenient, but I'm not so keen on the city. I recently lived on Pennsylvania near Grand River and never had any problems, but I certainly wouldn't have walked around alone (even during the day I wasn't okay with that). I tend to be a bit paranoid, but better safe than sorry! Based on this, and the intense search I went on with no satisfactory results except Stadium District and Prudden Place (both out of my price range as well, and I still wouldn't feel safe walking around at night), I will probably choose a place in north East Lansing (away from the undergrads a bit) or in Okemos. Now more to your direct inquiry: Magnolia and Rumsey are both long streets; I would imagine you're talking about close to Sparrow, in which case it's probably not too terrible. I would say the closer to Michigan Ave. the better. GOod luck!
