I live in Escanaba MI and have lived in many other areas. None that were exspecially warm. Upper Michigan takes the cake for cold, crappy, depressing weather. When it is nice out its gorgeous, but that only gives you false hope and you know that it will be wickedly cold in another month. As for the beached whales I woulndn't now because its been too cold to even ponder going to a beach. Although there are many nice private beaches u can go to when it is nice enough and not worry about "beached whales"!

Must not have lived/been too many places that were cold if you think Escanaba takes the cake for "cold, crappy, depressing weather."

I live right on the Michigan border (South Bend) and I just LOVE making trips into Michigan because of the natural beauty. Seriously, anyone who says Michigan is a flat dreary place hasn't stepped foot in north central Indiana. It's flat as a pancake with only corn to look at.

It's the weather that we've been having the last week that erases the memories of the cold, dreary, grey days of winter and makes it worthwhile.
Sunny days with just a touch of cool, watching college football with the windows open, snacking on fresh peaches, plums and MI sweet corn.....oh how I love fall.

Urban areas will always be ugly to some extent - because duh, they're urban areas. But Michigan's scenic value does nothing for me and I've lived here for decades. I don't own a house on beachfront property and I don't have the luxury of going sailing, golfing or driving all over the state when there is a sunny day (usually Michigan's sunniest/warmest days seem to fall during the work week...why, I have no clue...but pay attention and you'll notice this pattern).
Snow looks pretty for a couple weeks (usually leading up to the holidays to get people in the mood for Christmas) but you're lying to yourself if you honestly believe you like freezing, horrible-weather-for-driving, dark and gloomy conditions after that for the next 3-4 months straight.
There are better places to be in the US and coupled with Michigan's craptastic economy, MI's "scenic" value drops even further.

That was my thinking when I moved to the Gulf Beaches of FL in 05'. I was born and raised just south of Ann Arbor and spent my first 30 years in MI. Ironically enough, I got sick and tired of the constant sunshine, heat and humidity in FL, and it's the same here in GA. And talk about rude obnoxious people, try the people in GA!! Southern Hospitality got lost here.
Since living in GA I miss MI more than ever!! Which is why I am coming back HOME this summer in 2010!! I will have enough money saved up to live off of for at least 2 years in case I have a hard time finding a job. I work in IT/Telecommunications so hopefully it wont take longer than 24 months to find one. But if it does, my childhood friend said he can always make room for me to work on his farm... Just like the old days when we were growing up.
You truly never know what you have till it's gone! I TRULY miss the snow, the cold weather, and the overcast cloudy days.
GO BLUE, GO TIGERS, and come on LIONS...lets get at least 1!

Even though it does get cold, dreary and nasty, most people who complain about this kind of weather dont try to do anything about it. If you want, there is still quite a bit to do during winter. If you just say...I hate cold and snow and lock yourself up, then its gonna get you. Personally I dont mind it. Its the last month or two when its all muddy and dreary that suck, but the winter makes us all appreciate the nicer months even more.

Agreed. I spent some time in the UP and in Escanaba. The town is OK but the weather is gloomy and cold.

Beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder. Some people love cold cloudy wintery days, some don't. Some love mountains and deserts and others can't stand them. Some love the wide open spaces of states like Texas, others don't.
Every place has it's beauty and "nice weather" but it all depends on what someone thinks is nice or beautiful.

EXACTLY! Michigan is an amazingly beautiful state from top to bottom. And the weather cannot change that, whether it is a cobalt blue sky or a charcoal gray one. And from Nov-Mar, I do not mind the clouds at all...winter is a beautiful season.

I am fully capable of appreciating nice weather without crappy weather to set the scene.
