Michigan is far from ugly and, for a northern state, the weather is pretty tame imo.
It was far worse in Iowa this winter than it was in Michigan.

Oh, and deslok, how is someone offending you, or anyone else, by going to the beach just because you don't approve of their physique?
Don't look. I doubt anyone is looking for your approval or permission to be seen in public no matter how they look.
It's not a competition, it's called enjoying life and I'm thinking most people don't put looking good in a bikini or going shirtless high on their list of priorities.

It is a nice place for five months. Buy winters tamer than Iowa? I don't think so.
There may be times it is for a week at a clip, but over all not even close. Or you are comparing it to southern MI. Northern MI Iowa can not even compare to how bad it gets. Now with Japan leading the way to Lit. Ion batts and technology Detroit is just going down the drain even farther. With nasty weather and industry going over seas.

I'm glad there are some small towns out there where there is peace. I really wished our experience was better because I certainly wouldn't have such a hard time staying around then !
There were a few other posts making negative comments about their neighborhoods too. I have one word for you all..... Move!!! I have lived all over western, central, and upper MI and have never once been a victim of a crime let alone had anything stolen etc. I don't even know of anyone who has.
Quit making your opinions about your personal areas representative of the state as a whole. It's FAR from accurate!!
I can honestly say that out of the dozen plus places I've lived in MI, I've only lived in one unfriendly neighborhood in the Grand Rapids area and I got out of there pretty quick to a friendlier part of G.R.
I know and talk to my neighbors. We all help each other out and look after those who may need extra assistance. If you think your neighborhood is unfriendly because no one is talking to you....... take the initiative and get out there!! Become the change that you seek!! Who said that?? Think it was Ghandi....... <goes to look it up>

My mom was just telling me a month or so ago that there's some statue of a saint that you're supposed to bury in your front yard if you want your house to sell quickly. I've never heard of it before........

Altho it must not of worked because she decided to stay and pulled her house of the market.

(I honestly have no clue where she got that little tidbit from either)

You know, I think that this weather contendo issue is a matter of perspective. I grew up in the mts. of PA and then lived for 17 years in Michigan. I loved it in both areas for many reasons, but the weather is at the top of the list.

There is nothing more wonderful than feeling the crisp fall of Oct. and Nov. turn to the blustery Dec. through March winter, and then surprises throughout April with glimpses of Spring and a quick wake-up call with a snowfall to remind you where you are!

But, best of all is seeing the calendar hit May and having the windows open to hear the birds singing and feel the breezes of spring and summer (except for those 2 really hot weeks every August) right through September.

In GA, our current homestate, the windows must stay closed all of the time because if the heat doesn't get you the scorpions and roaches will!!!

Feel blessed that you live in such a changeable climate that always promises something new and lovely next month. I love Michigan weather.

The lake is beautiful and some areas are gorgeous, Im from Cali and have been here in MI for 6 yrs and I must say, its is backwards in soo many ways from every other state. Due to work Ive lived in many states and if you look up what the differences are youll find this is known as very backwards and not in a good way. The running water comment tho....look at Leno, that chin and he wants to talk about something stupid like water? lol Sorry, not a fan of his. Hes rude to anyone who doesnt live in HIS state of Cali, where Im from. All states and cities have their ups n downs, but all of Michigan is backwards to alot of rules, way things are done, etc. I do think Detroit is much like east LA, very filthy and if I never go again Id be happy. Altho its close to Troy and the somerset malls are awesome! If youve never lived outside of MI then the things we call backwards...you wont understand. Its not a big deal tho...the things are all small so its really how picky of a person you are.
