Default Planning a June Vacation Petoskey Area

We are planning a vacation for June 15-21 and will be staying at the Inn at Bay Harbor, near Petoskey Michigan. We have 3 small children and like to take them to swim at Young State Park and Deer Lake. The water is nice and shallow for them to play in.

In previous years we always came in the month of August. The water felt sooooo warm! I am now rethinking my vacation set for June. Do you think it would be warm enough to swim and have it enjoyable?

The hotel appears to be very booked for the summer. If we give up our reservations in June and come in August, we would have to find a different hotel.

I'd love to hear your advice. Should we keep our reservations for June or cancel and think of something else?

Thanks!
Michelle

Well, it will still be beautiful, but the water is going to be way colder in June than it will be in August......its still getting down into the 30's at night. This weekend looks like we finally break into summer temps (crossing fingers) but the water isnt going to heat up that fast

My parents live on a large lake in NW Michigan and it really doesn't warm up til mid summer. My daughter never cares and loves to swim in any temp. It may be less crowded for yor trip which would be nice. Charlevoix is a great town.

Temps have been very cold up here this spring, and June is only a week away. The water is still bone cold.

We're hoping it's not gonna be another summer like 2005, when the waters NEVER warmed up. I came up here to swim in Burt Lake in August of that year and thought I was going to die of hypothermia.

I think that you can do a day pass to go to the indoor waterpark at Boyne. It was really cool! Well, actually quite nice and warm.... My kids are 7, 3 and 1 and they all had a blast, as did my husband and I!

Another option is to swim at Walloon Lake. It is an inland lake and is always the first to warm up in the area. It is a very nice, very small resort town between Petoskey and Boyne City. There is plenty of parking. The only draw back I can think of would be the large rocks the placed on the shore to stop erosion. However, lots of people swim there because it is shallow and safe for kids. Be careful crossing the road!

In regards to rescheduling, Boyne Resorts has properties at Inn @ Bay Harbor/Boyne Falls/Boyne Mtn, and Boyne Highlands as well. It is all one big reservation system and I am certain you can transfer your reservation to another property if the Inn is full on your new date. Boyne Mountain is the location of Avalanche Bay, of which another writer spoke. It is a great water park and they offer pkgs at the Mountain Grand. If you wish to reschedule I am sure that you can move to another property. You mentioned swimming in Deer Lake, which is also loacted right at Boyne Mountain.

The weather is a hard to call up here, but to me, June is a little cool for water play! I agree with ImaMichigander. I would play in the water - INSIDE! We love Avalanche Bay!

Have a great time when you visit us!

Greeting everyone!
Thank you for all your replies! I am thinking that I will change my vacation plans.

We originally selected June to go on vacation, because we would be on vacation during my actual birthday (I'm turning 40 this year). Back in January when we made our plans, June seemed like it would be warm!

Originally we had 6 nights at the Inn at Bay Harbor.

Here are our new plans:
3 nights at the Inn at Bay Harbor and 3 nights on Mackinac Island starting the second week of August. (We were not able to get 6 nights at the Inn at Bay Harbor in August.)

I've been to Mackinac Island several times and it really holds a special place in my heart.

What do you think? Is this a better plan? While I won't be away on my actual birthday, I do think as a family we will hopefully have better weather in August to be at the pool, go to the lakes, play in the sand.

Thanks again!
Michelle

You will certainly have much warmer weather in August up there. Another thing to be concerned about in June in northern Michigan is Mosquitoes. They're winding down by the first of August and pretty much gone by September. I really think late August and early September are the nicest times to be up north. I own property near Fife lake and we love it that time of year. Many Lakes are still warm enough to swim even beyond Labor day.
I was swimming the first week in October last year. But that was during an unussual warm spell.

Michelle, I think your new plans are much better! You actually got me to thinking about our vacation plans. We don't go too far from home...don't have too when you live in paradise!) However, we are leaving now in mid July instead of June! There is a fabulous outdoor water park in Mackinaw City. Just Google Thunder Falls. If you like playing in the water the whole family will love this place! They have a fabulous wave pool and the prices are very reasonable. Concessions that won't break the bank as well........

Hope you enjoy your time here!
