Going back to the original question, casinos good or bad for Michigan?

It depends on who is spending the money in the casinos. Does anyone know how many people visiting the casinos in downtown Detroit are from Detroit? If they are mainly from Detroit, than the tax revenue that Detroit is getting is money just shuffling around like a shell game. "Taxation for the mathematically challenged".

However, if the great majority of the gamblers in downtown Detroit are from outside Detroit, than it should be a net gain for the city. Statistically speaking, the house always wins. They aren't building multi-Billion dollar casinos in Vegas because the majority of people are leaving there WITH money.

Default Good for the workers

The casinos are great for the people they have employed! Dealers make a good wage at least...and as someone else said, you can't blame the casino if someone spends more than they can afford to lose. Might as well take alcohol and cigarettes off the market too. But it would be nice to bring in people from nearby states to gamble some of their money into the MI economy instead of just local folks. That is why Detroit needs a mayor who is committed to revitalizing the city rather than his own bank account.

People are moving to downtown, and crime (broken link) is pretty low. And not all of the neighborhoods are crime infested either.

Slots in the UP casinos are too tight. Stick to the table games.

By the way, does anyone remember the movie "Reindeer Games" with Ben Affleck? A heist movie; robbing a Yooper casino on Christmas eve.
