Pasties In The U.P.
An absolute treat when visiting the Upper Peninsula is the pasty. Not paste-ee, but as in past-ee.
The best place I know now is in Iron River. I don't know the name but it is near the high school and right on highway 2 on the western side. Iron Mountain and Ironwood have some great places to. You can also get the Mi style pasty in Florence, Wi just over the border from Iron River. There are other pasties elsewhere but nothing seems to compare with unique recipe from the U.P.
I used to plan trips, now over 400 miles to the U.P., but with the price of gas I won't be doing that. So what did I discover? In the frozen food section of a local store there are genuine pasties from Florence Wi. Not quite like the freshly made hot and steaming but at least close.
Anyone have any great pasty places to share?

My kitchen! Dinner is served at.........
There are some funny unwritten rules about making pasties. Some years ago my aunt's church was having a fundraiser by selling pasty diiners. The ladies in the kitchen got into quite a verbal tussle about which way you folded the dough to make a pasty. Funny, but not very charitable I'll admit. I wondered if they were all hockey fans too?
There is a good place in Mackinaw City, southwest of the fort, but I can't remember the name
Oh, there is a pasty shop on Northline in Southgate.

Isn't it the Mackinaw Pastie Company on Jamet Street?
I know they serve them at some restaurants in the city too, specifically at Cunningham's on Central Avenue.

Copper harbor has some good ones too. It's been years since I've been there, I really need to go back.

Best Pasties
Yes, the BEST PASTIES are in Iron River MI at the Pasty Corner...Ymmmm! They are similiar to the ones we used to make at the church in Alpha with all the older ladies! They taught us how to dice the potatoes in one hand. The crust was so flaky and buttery. The Pasty Corner will make special orders ahead of time, we usually bring home at least 30 frozen ones and have them all winter. We drive for 6 hr. They are closed on Sundays and only stay open until 6pm. I have found a brand in some stores in southern WI called Capt. Jack's made in Bessemer and they are very good. Say Yah to da U.P. eh!

Just north of Escanaba in Wells township off US 41 you get on CO RD 426 for about 3 miles and Shellies Deli is on the right. I was passing through one morning and stopped to use the restroom as they were pulling the pasties out of the oven. Never eaten a better pasty before or since. They take alot of pride in their pasties but its hard to get the word out when your so far off the beaten path
