I grew up in Pennfield from birth and it is a very, very close knit country community- kind of like Marshall. I would reccomend it, actually.
Another place to live that I would reccommend would be by the Battle Creek country club-they have gorgeous houses. There are definately places in the Battle Creek public school area to avoid, though, in my opinion. If you want more specific information, private message me

I would have to say that, at least when I went to school, if you lived north of Columbia then you were considered on the wrong side of the road. Some of my sibilings kids have gone there and have found the same problems. It is a decent school system but the faculty also contribute to the problems (though not all of the faculty)
You do have to plan on keeping your kids in the most up to date fashions or they will automatically be made an outcast. (notice the spelling, I did learn how to spell in Lakeview)
These are facts not fiction. Yes all kids will have friends there, and everybody has their group. I just feel that there are better school systems, that are more worried about having the best choices of classes rather than building a new High school to keep up with the other School systems that actually needed new buildings.
Lakeview, Pennfield, and Harper Creek are decent enough schools, just dont expect them to be great

Kalamazoo?
Have you looked into Kalamazoo at all? It's about 20-30 minutes from Battle Creek and a much better fit to what you are used to in Columbus, OH.
I have been to Columbus, and what you are used to can be seen more in Kalamazoo then Battle Creek. Although Battle Creek has dining, shopping, neighborhoods, they do not offer as much or the variety that Kalamazoo does.
I spent 5 years living in Kalamazoo (WMU graduate), and the only reason I don't live there now is that I love big city living and that Kalamazoo/Western Michigan is really focused on families and kids (nothing wrong with that), but it wasn't a good fit for me.
Either way, congrats and welcome to Michigan!

I lived in both kzoo and Bc as well, there isn't a big deal of difference between kzoo and Bc as far as people go. Go where you can find a job. Kalamazoo however is not worlds better then Battle Creek, or vice versa. The things to do in Kalamazoo are littered with college kids, Battle Creek is not. All of western Michigan is fairly family oriented which did not appeal to me.
As far as schools and children, up to date fashions, that sort of is par for the course at any school without a dress code. Doesn't hurt to keep up to date really, imo.
